The .lck file is created *every* time any file - book or .fm - is opened by FrameMaker.
This is to prevent multiple simultaneous opens of the same file from different sessions of FrameMaker (local or on the network) by you or others. They should not *normally* cause FrameMaker to crash ... just prevent the file from being opened again. Are you using these files on a network? If so, it is possible that they get left behind inadvertently when the file is closed and appear to cause problems. Generally speaking, if you know that you are the only person opening the file, you can delete the .lck files and proceed without concern. Or ... am I misinterpreting what you mean by "cause Frame to crash"?
