render same variable in two numbering formats

Hi all--

I'm using <$sectionnum> in several numbering sequences within a document. In 
the section heading, it needs to be Roman (II). Everywhere else (subhead 
numbering, page numbers in footers), it needs to be Arabic (2). Any "right" or 
"best" way to do this?
