Similar to what I do, except for one important (to me, a critical) difference.
After selecting the text, in character designer, the first thing I do is set "Commands->Set Window to As Is", *before* selecting/deselecting the "Change Bar" button and applying the character format. Else I might clobber *other* paragraph / character format settings to the text that I needed the change bar on. The criteria that is most important to me is being able to remove the revisions marks when going from version 2 to 3 so that the next set of revision marks only indicates the changes in version 3 and not versions 2 and 3.
