I meant to post again about this yesterday, but for some reason my messages to the framers list aren't showing up until the next day.
The problem seems to have gone away. After unsuccessfully rebuilding the cross references, I went through the file and deleted all of the cross-reference markers. That generated more error messages. I shut down the book before I went for lunch, and resumed work in the afternoon. When I updated the book again, all of the errors disappeared. I have no idea what happened but it seems to have fixed itself after I restarted Frame.
