Karen, I was having similar problems with my FM9, also Windows 7 Pro, less than
12 month old Dell 64bit machine, 8G RAM, and good graphics card for dual
monitors. I was also running Patternstream as a plugin to FM9. The problem was
that FM9 kept freezing and hanging, and other times would be completely fine.

The cause turned out to be down to two things, and I'm still not sure which was
the main cause: Firstly, as I work remotely, sometimes I have an active VPN
connection to the office, this was apparently sending out a different IP
address to that given out when the VPN connection wasn't running. The two
different IP addresses were causing conflicts, with all the licencing pings
that happen these days. Secondly, the hard drive was dying, unbeknownst to me,
and of course, it became terminal two days before my printing deadline.

Reconfigured VPN that doesn't have internet access and new HP machine have
solved all my FM freezes. Plus upgrading to FM10 (this happened later, FM9 was
stable on the new setup).

I'm not sure if any of this will apply to your situation, but thought it was
worth putting out there about the IP address conflicts, it wasn't something I'd
considered when looking for causes of freezing on these lists and elsewhere,
and it doesn't seem to be mentioned anywhere else either. It was only
afterwards that I worked out that FM had been fine when the VPN was off, and
played up when it was running - when the different IP was being broadcast.

Hi everyone,

Still having issues with FrameMaker 9 (all patches) becoming unresponsive;
Panel actions don't work or panels don't show up at all, with only FrameMaker (
2 or 3 section of a book open) open. I noticed when that happens, if I have the
Paragraph Panel open, that a small white strip shows up in the left side, top
of the Panel. FM Won't stay open longer than about 5 or 10 min if I am creating
or changing tabs, even if I am not using the ruler to change the tabs. I close
and reopen FM and sometimes it works and sometimes I have to once again reboot.
Also have the IE Explorer stopping and starting - are the two related in any
way?

I am using Windows 7 Pro (all patches), Microsoft Office 2010 on a Dell T5500
64 bit quad with 12 G of RAM and I have 800 G available on drive. NVIDIA Quadro
2000 card with 1 G Graphics Memory, display adapter drive is up to date
8.17.12.5929 and a Samsung LED 23 in Monitor SyncMaster.

Is FM 9 this buggy or is there a setting that is causing this issue, ANYONE
have insight?

Thank you in advance for your time.

The fact that IE appears to stop/start indicates that something is going on in
the background - try using your system monitoring tools to see what processes
are running when things start to act weird.

Hi Karen,

I don't have an answer for your particular problem, but I can answer one
question: Yes, FrameMaker 9 is buggy. Remember Windows ME? FrameMaker 9 is the
Windows ME of FrameMaker. FrameMaker 10 is much more stable. FrameMaker
8 is even better J.
