Are you sure there's an alpha in the font you're using? You can inspect it with Windows' Character Map utility. It will indicate the key sequence to type it in the status bar.
If you're using a Unicode font, 097 is wrong. Use one of the methods documented here: http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/3b1/index.htm Or just cut and paste from the "browser test page" that links to.
