Hi Scott,

Yep, you know it—I'm not using DITA, structured Frame, or DITA-FMx :-(. But I was just typing up a reply to the list, that corroborates your info:

I've received an offlist reply with a FrameScript to toggle the smart spaces on and off, so that's what I'll do (when I get to it, and purchase a new FrameScript license, which is now being sold directly by the developer, Frank Elmore, instead of Finite Matters, who sold it for many years).

In the meantime, this is manually possible just by using the manual process, Format > Document > Text Options, to toggle it on and off. I didn't realize that the setting was sticky only until you changed it, not a permanent file setting.

And yes, I bet there is a simple shortcut for F-keys that I could set up; I hadn't thought of that because I didn't know what key sequence I needed to keep repeating :-).

(So in this respect, FrameMaker is just like Word. Years ago, when I had to use word for a client for a big suite of user docs, I used keyboard macros to toggle smart quotes on and off so that the code snippets would use plain quotes.)

Thanks for the tips and info!
-Monique

Subject: Re: [Framers] smart spaces - selectively disabling ?

Hi Monique...

*If* you're working with DITA and *if* you're using DITA-FMx .. you're
in luck! FMx has an option to do just that (as well as the same for
smart quotes). But I'm thinking that this doesn't help your current
situation. :o

My only remotely useful suggestion would be to create an ExtendScript to
toggle this on/off with a keystroke. If I find myself with some spare
time on my hands (not likely in the near future), I might just make a
plugin to do this .. does seem rather useful .. but don't hold your breath.

I assume you've looked for a keyboard shortcut to toggle this setting?

Hmm .. isn't there a way to create shortcuts for "F-KEYS"? I'll try and
check something later this afternoon. Rick might know and beat me to it
... ??

Cheers,
...scott

Hello, Framers,

I’ve got smart spaces set for my docs. But... I’d prefer to not have it for my code para styles. (For years I’ve been kludging it by using non-breaking spaces or copy/pasting—but NOT by paste special > Text, which strips the formats/extra spaces.)

But I can’t find any way to set/disable smart spaces on a para or char style. It seems that there’s just a single document setting for it, which controls the entire .fm file?

Pointers to how to selectively disable smart spaces or suggestions for better work-arounds are most appreciated!
