I'm at a loss. Would you be willing to send me directly a Word file with the problematic text? It's hard to diagnose without that.
A look at the MIF file might provide a clue, although at this point I'm not sure what you'd need to look for. Was it showing up as text question marks or those black diamonds with the white question mark inside?
