Subject: [Framers] Question about FrameMaker subscription less than a full
year

Hello! This is my first post to this list. I teach tech writers at Austin
Community College (Texas). For years I taught a course featuring FrameMaker;
Frame 11 was the last version I taught with--Adobe got too strict about
student access.

I tried to download the 30-day free trial but screwed up not seeing the
second setup.exe. And so I downloaded again (that was wrong), installed. But
when I open Frame, I get an expired message.

My main concern is helping students around the expense of learning Frame: a
4-month subscription at $39 US would be right in there with current textbook
costs.

Does anyone know if this is possible?

So,

I just opened FM2019 (Windows 10, 64-bit, fully updated) for the first time
in in about a month and a half and whoa. . . the Welcome screen has been
taken over by gremlins apparently. . . it has a totally different layout,
font size, different options etc. I had no idea that this was even
possible. . .I mean it's a desktop app with a perpetual license so the app
doesn't have to "phone home" when I launch it , but then even further,
after I opened the book that I last worked on 6 weeks ago, and for one file
in the book, I am getting the following message:

The file "filename.fm" is not a FM file. Framemaker can try to open the file
in either Framemaker or in the file's native application. Uh, the file

>>IS<< an FM file . . . I just worked on it 6 weeks ago w/out any issues.

When I click on the Framemaker option, I then get a second message stating
that the file can't be opened with this version of FM. . . but it's a file
that I just opened 6 weeks ago. I punted and then tried the heroic open
option to no avail.

I know the chances of this oddity being related to the Welcome screen
metamorphosis is pretty slim, but >>SOMETHING<< had to change in the app to
give me two issues at once.

Thoughts???? I really, really need to be able to open this file.

TIA,

Welcome screen issues - several reports on the FM forum; Adobe is looking
into it - there's a workaround involving editing the welcome.htm file
posted. It appears that some Win10 update has messed it up.

Unopenable file - haven't got much to help you on that - maybe download the

2020 trial and try opening a copy of it with that and if it works back save
it & as .mif ________________________________

And if you can't use the trial version for some reason, let us know. I know
I'm willing to open it for you and put it through a mif wash, and I doubt
I'm the only one.

Hello,

In all the years I have been using FrameMaker, I have only ever experienced
files that couldn't be opened in the following cases:

1 - files saved on USB drives, and Windows deciding to save energy putting
computer to sleep

2 - files saved on network locations

3 - files located on a failing drive

#1 was very irritating.? A combination of Windows 10 and HP hardware
actually corrupted not just FrameMaker documents, but also other files -
with no identifiable pattern to it.?? As a result, I avoid using USB drives
for everyday working.

#2 has been frustrating.? If the network drive, or the network connection
speed is slow, I've experienced FrameMaker crashing when attempting to
update books, or worse, when attempting to access referenced PDF files.

#3 was experienced by our FM trainer who thought his computer had caught a
virus.? I diagnosed [using "CrystalDiskPortable"] the hard drive was in fact
failing to read and write files ... occasionally!??? After using the Linux
utility ddrescue, I was able to retrieve 99.99% of his files.

If I remember correctly, FrameMaker files are always written out in
multiples of 1024 bytes [1kb].

If I'm working on a big project, I get in to the habit of using a frequent
backup strategy to store FM and other documents in a ZIP archive file with a
timestamp reference.? Just in case.

I hope this helps.

/// Simon BUCH

Thanks - #2 just might be why I get crashes as my files are on a network.

Have you ever worked out what constitutes a "slow" response?

Currently I am working at home and remoting in to the server with Citrix.

Previous pandemic configurations used different software to work remotely
and were much more unstable (I think I've only lost my Citrix connection
once over the past few months, as opposed to once?or even 5?times a day). I
wasn't working much with Frame then, though, so I don't have any "data" to
compare to my current crashes.

Hello,

In all the years I have been using FrameMaker, I have only ever experienced
files that couldn't be opened in the following cases:

1 - files saved on USB drives, and Windows deciding to save energy putting
computer to sleep

2 - files saved on network locations

3 - files located on a failing drive

#1 was very irritating. A combination of Windows 10 and HP hardware
actually corrupted not just FrameMaker documents, but also other files -

with no identifiable pattern to it. As a result, I avoid using USB drives

for everyday working.

#2 has been frustrating. If the network drive, or the network connection
speed is slow, I've experienced FrameMaker crashing when attempting to
update books, or worse, when attempting to access referenced PDF files.

#3 was experienced by our FM trainer who thought his computer had caught a
virus. I diagnosed [using "CrystalDiskPortable"] the hard drive was in fact

failing to read and write files ... occasionally! After using the Linux

utility ddrescue, I was able to retrieve 99.99% of his files.

If I remember correctly, FrameMaker files are always written out in
multiples of 1024 bytes [1kb].

If I'm working on a big project, I get in to the habit of using a frequent
backup strategy to store FM and other documents in a ZIP archive file with a
timestamp reference. Just in case.

I hope this helps.

If it's just you working on them, I'd haul them all local, work on them, and
then zip them up to be backed up on the network location each day. If there
are more authors involved, then your source control system should be
checking files out & back in for you.
