I've seen several suggestions to use PDF and then convert from there. I've had success with "Save as" to Microsoft RTF and >100 page documents, which will avoid some of the issues that have been covered in other responses. I don't want to oversell, though, as the nuances Tam lays out below are non-trivial.

I have tons across references. I have numbered figures that need to remain numbered sequentially. I have a bibliography that uses super scripts for cross references, etc. It’s just a nightmare and I don’t even want to think about starting this but I don’t have a choice.
