Dear frameworkers:

On November 4th 2001, Xcèntric, the CCCB's cinema<http://xcentric.cccb.org/en>,
held its first ever screening (a retrospective of Kenneth Anger), launching a
regular program of screenings dedicated to experimental and artists' films, an
unprecedented event in the city of Barcelona. Exactly 20 years (and thousands
of films) later, we're celebrating this 20th anniversary with a series of
screenings, performances and talks to pay tribute to cinema as a collective
experience, to the survival of photochemical film, and to the profession of the
projectionist, as well as necessarily reflecting on the present and future of
cinema in the digital era.

This event will take place at the Center for Contemporary Culture of Barcelona
from November 4 to 7 (next week) and on December 12, 2021. Here you have some
information about each session:

Nov. 4: Opening
act.<http://xcentric.cccb.org/en/programas/fitxa/coming-soon-to-this-screen-le-film-est-deja-commence-/237236>
Coming soon to THIS screen: Le Film est déjà commencé ?: The first film by the
Lettrist Maurice Lemaître, multidisciplinary artist and pioneer of expanded
cinema, involves the audience in a festive "happening" that does away with all
the elements of traditional cinematography. Screened in 35mm.

Nov. 5: Scenes From Under
Childhood<http://xcentric.cccb.org/en/programas/fitxa/scenes-from-under-childhood/237238>:
Stan Brakhage's major work and his great film about childhood, Scenes From
Under Childhood (1967-70) explores the birth of vision. By filming his
children, the cineaste composes, in four parts and from foetal beginnings, the
experience of discovering colour and light, materialising his ideas about the
art of vision and the unexplored but original potential of cinema. Screened in
16mm.

Nov. 5-7: The Futures of
Cinema:<http://xcentric.cccb.org/en/programas/fitxa/the-futures-of-cinema/237237>
Is cinema dying or simply changing? Are the world's film archives endangered
and therefore also our collective audiovisual memory? These are just some of
the many questions posed by Cinema Futures, a documentary by Michael Palm about
the present and future of cinema in the digital era.

Nov. 6: Obsolete technology or cinema of
vision?<http://xcentric.cccb.org/en/programas/fitxa/obsolete-technology-or-cinema-of-vision/237239>:
This session, which includes the talk Cinema of Vision by professor Tom
Gunning (via Zoom) as well as screening the film Kodak by Tacita Dean (screened
in 16mm), aims to generate reflection through a dialogue with the other
screenings and proposals for the 20th anniversary of Xcèntric.

Nov. 7: Projection
Instructions<http://xcentric.cccb.org/en/programas/fitxa/projection-instructions/237240>:
A special session that brings the projector and work of the projectionist to
the fore. The recreation of the legendary performance A Lecture, by Hollis
Frampton, will be followed by the screening of a collection of works that
reflect the material aspects of the act of projection, with works by Morgan
Fisher, Barry Gerson, Ernie Gehr, Gary Beydler, Paul Sharits and Hans Scheugl.
Finally, the artists Valentina Alvarado Matos and Carlos Vásquez Méndez will
enact a performance entitled Echo Chamber. Screenings in 16mm.

Dec. 12:
Album<http://xcentric.cccb.org/en/programas/fitxa/album-boris-lehman/237241>:
This session presents one of the first films in which Boris Lehman, who will be
present in this session, lays the foundations of what will become his
filmography, Album 1. It's a silent film shot in Super 8 that's designed to be
shown with direct sound: a piano improvisation and several voices reading texts
by William Burroughs, Henri Michaux and the filmmaker himself, features that
make this screening a unique event. Live musical accompaniment by Marina
Herlop. Screened in 16 mm.

It would be great if you could join us! If you are far away, you can always
check our online program Xcèntric Focus<http://xcentric.cccb.org/en/focus>
(this month we have La plage by Patrick Bokanowski).

Best wishes,

Gloria Vilches
