An unofficial Frameworks FAQ
FAQs were commonly posted to mailing lists and USENET groups in the
early days of the public Internet. They've fallen out of favor but
remain useful. I've drafted one for Frameworks. It's factual but
slightly opinionated.
I'm not an administrator of the list and have no power to change
any of the procedures or policies described herein.

0. What is Frameworks?
From
https://mail.film-gallery.org/mailman/listinfo/frameworks_film-gallery.org:
FrameWorks is an international forum on experimental film, avant-garde
film, film as art, Film as film, or film as visual poetry -- film's
expressive qualities, aside from or in addition to its storytelling
capacity. Discussions cover any genre of experimental film, such
as film diary, found footage, abstract, flicker, lyric, subversive,
expanded, etc., as well as those films which fall into the cracks
between the genres, or those not covered by other lists.
All aspects, from filmmaking to criticism, are acceptable in this
context, including unipersonal production, techniques, history and
esthetics of avant-garde film, critical discussions, new directions,
courses and teaching, festivals, announcements of world-wide events
in film, retrospectives, exchanges of information, etc.
However, please keep in mind that this list is not intended for the
discussion of narrative film, nor documentary film, nor video, nor
video art.
1. How does someone subscribe to Frameworks?
Anyone can subscribe to Frameworks by filling out the form in the
"Subscribing to Frameworks" section of
https://mail.film-gallery.org/mailman/listinfo/frameworks_film-gallery.org
which requires only your email address. Your name and choice of
password is optional. Note that the system may email your password
to you in unencrypted form so you should either let the system
automatically generate one for you when you need it or select a
password that's unique to Frameworks.
Soon after you've submitted your information you will receive an
email from [email protected]; it may get filtered
into your Spam/Junk mailbox so look for it there if it doesn't
appear in your Inbox. Contained within are several ways to confirm
your subscription. The most trustworthy way is to simply reply;
you don't need to add or change anything in your message.
(As of August 2022 many of the links generated by the Frameworks
Mailman installation are broken as they leave out the "mail."
part of the URL.)
You should soon receive a "Welcome to the "Frameworks" mailing
list" email. It is a good idea to save this message if for no
other reason than as a reminder of which email address you used
to subscribe.
2. How does someone unsubscribe from Frameworks?
A subscriber can unsubscribe from Frameworks through the form in the
"Frameworks Subscribers" section of
https://mail.film-gallery.org/mailman/listinfo/frameworks_film-gallery.org
This requires you know and still have access to the email address
you used when you initially subscribed.
Enter your email address and hit the "Unsubscribe or edit options"
button. On the next page hit the "Unsubscribe" button; you'll
soon receive an email that asks you to confirm. The most trustworthy
way is to simply reply; you don't need to add or change anything
in your message.
You should soon receive a "You have been unsubscribed from the
Frameworks mailing list" confirmation email.
3. How do I send a message to Frameworks?
Compose and send your email to [email protected]
4. Do I have to receive messages one by one or is there a digest?
The form at
https://mail.film-gallery.org/mailman/listinfo/frameworks_film-gallery.org
gives you the option to subscribe to a daily digest of Frameworks
posts when you sign up. Additionally, you can switch your settings
later using the "Unsubscribe or edit options" button.
There are a few reasons not to sign up for the digest.
If you reply to a digest the subject of your message will be
something like "Re: Frameworks Digest, Vol 80, Issue 4" and anyone
following the original subject/thread may not come across your
contribution. Even if you copy & paste the subject, a threaded
mail reader such as Gmail will not slot your message properly
into the conversation.
Many contemporary email programs also "bottom quote"; they put
the entire message you're responding to below your response and
what readers see is your original content followed by potentially
hundreds of lines of the digest, most of it potentially unrelated
to your contribution. It's not a good look, it's difficult to
search later, and it fills up disk drives with redundant information.
5. How can I tell if someone is subscribed to Frameworks? Aka does
anyone have an email address for so and so?
A subscriber can view the Frameworks subscribers list from the
"Frameworks Subscribers" section of
https://mail.film-gallery.org/mailman/listinfo/frameworks_film-gallery.org
You will need the email address you used to subscribe and
your password before you can select "Visit Subscriber List". If
you have forgotten or did not set a password, you can retrieve
it by hitting the "Unsubscribe or edit options" button, then
"Remind". A password will be emailed to you.
The "Frameworks Subscribers" page displays columns of email
addresses for Non-Digest and Digest members. It can be searched
using the Find In Page command of your web browser. This works
well for addresses that include the name of the person you're
searching for, not so well for addresses like "torn-sprocket-1164".
If you're sure the person you're looking for has previously posted
to Frameworks you may also be able to find their address in the
archives. See FAQ 7.
6. Yikes on FAQ 5! How can I prevent people from finding my email address?
A subscriber can conceal themselves from the subscribers list by
starting at the "Frameworks Subscribers" section of
https://mail.film-gallery.org/mailman/listinfo/frameworks_film-gallery.org
choosing the "Unsubscribe or edit options", then switching the
setting for "Conceal yourself from subscriber list?" from No to Yes.
7. Is there an archive of historical Frameworks posts?
Not a unified one.
Posts from June 2010 until the present time are available at
https://mail.film-gallery.org/pipermail/frameworks_film-gallery.org/
These can be organized by thread|subject|author|date and can be
downloaded in monthly chunks.
The Flicker site at http://www.hi-beam.net/fw/index.html archives –
* posts made between January 2006 and December 2011. These can
be organized by thread|author|date|subject|attachment
* indexes of posts made between November 1995 and December 2005.
These can be organized by author|date|subject
8. This all seems to hinge on the link to that one Frameworks page;
how can I remember it?
The URL is in the footer of every fricking email sent to Frameworks
subscribers.
