*Jonas Mekas 100!*
In 2022, the world and Lithuania celebrate the life and work of Jonas
Mekas, one of the country’s most prominent cultural figures of the 20th and
21st centuries and a global cultural phenomenon in his own right,
considered by many to be the “godfather of avant-garde cinema”.

Throughout his life, Mekas always emphasized and cherished his Lithuanian
roots. After fleeing the foreign occupation of his native land, he arrived
in New York City, in his own words “at exactly the right moment”, joining
thousands of others escaping the devastation wrought by destructive
ideologies and tyrannical regimes in Europe. One might say that Mekas left
one village, his native Semeniškiai in northern Lithuania, and immersed
himself in the life of another – the Village thriving in and around lower
Manhattan, and in its landmark publication, the Village Voice, helping to
shape American and global culture so profoundly in the latter half of the
20th century.

This centennial celebration, Jonas Mekas 100!, seeks to expand global
recognition of his work and encourage a deeper exploration of Mekas’
prolific contributions to cinema, film criticism, cultural organization,
and, in particular, his body of poems and prose, now published in
Lithuanian, French, German, English, Japanese, Hebrew, and many other
languages.

The centennial program features over 50 events in an expanding list of
countries, including: Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece,
Israel, Italy, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, South Korea, Sweden, Taiwan,
Ukraine, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The vast scope of
Mekas’ contribution to global cultural is examined through film screenings
and retrospectives, exhibitions, readings, workshops, new publications and
translations of Mekas’ writings, and concerts celebrating the spirit of his
work, among other events.

The centennial program is a joint international collaboration between
leading art and cinema organisations, curators, publishers, the global
network of Lithuanian cultural attachés, the Estate of Jonas Mekas, and the
Lithuanian Culture Institute.

*REFRESH: *CYANOBACTERIA OFFER PERSPECTIVE ON OURSELVES
This art-science collaboration looks at the microscopic ways cyanobacteria
move, on an individual level and in colonies. If we study these organisms
and their varied forms, we might discover ways to improve our future.

On display at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science in the Summit Stage and
Expedition Health, March 2022 - Fall 2022

The cells in your body take in oxygen and sweep out waste products like
carbon dioxide (CO2). Microscopic cyanobacteria use photosynthesis to work
in reverse, breathing in CO2 and pumping out oxygen.

Three billion years ago, cyanobacteria created Earth’s oxygenfilled
atmosphere, supporting the evolution of creatures like us. Today, they
provide one-quarter of the planet’s oxygen, and cyanobacteria like
spirulina provide us with food.

Researchers believe that cyanobacteria —which need only sunlight, CO2, and
water to thrive— could offer solutions to our changing climate. They might
help reduce CO2 on a grand scale, contribute to biofuel production, and
support long-term space travel. This diverse group of organisms offers a
symbolic warning as well: when colonies of cyanobacteria become too dense
or stressed, they can run out of nutrients or be destroyed by their own air
pollution.

Made with the collaborative efforts of filmmaker Erin Espelie and the
Jeffrey Cameron Laboratory at the University of Colorado Boulder, which
created a customized microscope system specifically tailored for long-term
growth and quantitative imaging of cyanobacterial cells; with special
thanks to microbiologist and cinematographer Evan Johnson and artists Nima
Bahrehmand, Travis Austin, Will Alstetter, as well as NEST Studio for the
Arts.

*The New England Triennial*
The New England Triennial 2022 recognizes the vitality of contemporary art
across the Northeast amid the recent years of upheaval and transformation.
Spanning two museum venues—deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum and
Fruitlands Museum—this year’s iteration features artwork by twenty-five
artists from Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode
Island, and Vermont.

Prioritizing change over stability, many of the artists’ practices involve
processes of unmaking and remaking—patching things together, dissecting,
and rebuilding forms using discarded parts. Their collective artistry
reveals interconnected tendencies: a focus on kinship and ancestral
lineages; a search for one’s place in the world; the visualization of data;
themes of ruin and decay, and processes of alchemical transmutation.
Artists in this exhibition grapple with difficult and unjust moments of
history and contemporary life. Some employ generations-old creative
traditions in poetic, passionate, and informed ways. Altogether, their work
unearths hidden energies and stories surfacing at a time defined by change
and resilience.

Since 1989, the New England Triennial (formerly known as the deCordova New
England Biennial) has been a mainstay of deCordova’s programming and
mission, exemplifying the museum’s commitment to contemporary art of the
Northeast region. For the first time, this upcoming cycle will span two
museum venues, deCordova and Fruitlands, expanding the platform for this
highly-anticipated survey of art making in New England. We hope you will
visit both locations to appreciate the exhibition’s full scope.

*Time Mechanicals: 16mm Cityscapes by Jim Jennings*
Filmforum is honored to celebrate the life and exquisite 16mm filmmaking of
Jim Jennings, who died on May 19 of this year. Jennings was a prolific
creator of intimate, generous, and visually striking works of observational
photography, nearly all silent and many filmed in the course of his NYC
commutes as a master plumber whose company, Time Mechanicals, took him to
all corners of the photogenic metropolis.

A quintessential New York filmmaker who approached the form of the city
symphony with much more of a folk musician’s soul, Jennings – as
characterized by friend and curator Mark McElhatten – “perseveres, in a
city nearly photographed to death, in bringing to light familiar elements
saved from disregard and savored into sharp filmic articulation.”

Jennings’s films are somehow understated and spectacular at the same time,
produced as they are from a sensibility marked by great humanity and
humility. He dearly loved observing the everyday, ordinary goings-on of his
environment, often filmed while traversing the city between plumbing jobs.
In much of his filmmaking, the quotidian ephemerality of these usually
urban spaces is captured and amplified to celebrate its intrinsic visual
poetry through his sensitive and artful eye. His editing, intuitively
complementary to his often breathtaking cinematography, was frequently done
in-camera, as he trusted his initial subjective reactions and the
cumulative procession of experience to communicate something of a vital and
evolving shared consciousness.

This program, presented with immense thanks to Jim’s wife Karen Treanor,
and the Academy Film Archive (home of Jim’s film collection), will be
projected from Jim’s own 16mm prints, including several gorgeous vintage
reversal prints!

*Films in 3-5 episodes*
The Jonas Mekas Studio and the Monira Foundation present a screening by Pip
Chodorov as part of the Jonas Mekas Centennial.

*The Man Who Could Not See Far Enough*, By Peter Rose, 1981, 33 min, 16mm
*Vestibule*, By Ken Kobland, 1978, 22 min, 16mm
*New York Scene*, By Takahiko Iimura, 1967, 35 min, 16mm
(All films courtesy of the Film-Makers’ Cooperative.)

The three 16mm films that make up this program are themselves composed of
episodes. Peter Rose’s The man who could not see far enough (1981, 33 min)
is in five parts, a series of tableaux that evoke the act of vision, the
limits of perception and the rapture of space. Ken Kobland’s Vestibule
(1978, 22 min) is in three parts, exploring an urban space and a meditation
on time, an intersection of memories and fantasies. Both films are also
virtuoso experiments in optical printing, Rose using frames in the frame to
describe a multiplicity in space, Kobland slowing and superimposing
gestures to describe a palimpsest in time. The third film is a series of
experiments by Takahiko Iimura, who also approached the act of filmmaking
in the late 1960s as a self-referential meditation on the camera’s ability
to see, and on the space and time of the film image. I am excited to see
these three films projected together and complementing each other.

*Kamari Carter & Julian Day: To Be Held*
An evening of live sound and scrolling LED visuals by New York-based
artists Kamari Carter and Julian Day. The event will be both performed live
in the space and live-streamed at the same time, for those unable to attend
on-site.

As the latest chapter in their ongoing live collaboration projection “To Be
Held” by C/D (Carter and Day) — who began working together in 2020 and are
fresh from an art residency at Wave Farm — the artists present an evening
of audio-visual collaboration in which Carter sonically responds to the
glowing words manifesting on several LED scrolling signs activated by Day
in real time.

Carter’s richly ambient live score stems from compositions completed by the
artist throughout 2020, which are interwoven with digital recordings of
friends and family from his personal archive of voicemails. While Day’s
multichromatic text-based visuals, flashing across custom LED panels
mounted on a wall, focus on “2020/21’s conflictual political, protest, and
pandemic-related rhetoric.”

*Potamkin by Stephen Broomer*
Join us for an evening of experimental films on Wednesday, August 24, at
8:00 p.m. (Please note later start, closer to sunset.) Admission $5.00,
free for ALL members. Seating is limited, and doors open at 7:30 p.m.

*Potamkin* | Stephen Broomer | Canada | 2017 | 67 minutes
In 1933, at age 33, Harry Alan Potamkin died of complications related to
starvation, at a time when he was one of the world's most respected film
critics. In his writings, he advocated for a cinema that would
simultaneously embrace the fractures and polyphony of modern life and the
equitable social vision of left radical politics. This film-biography is
assembled out of distorted fragments of films on which he had written, an
impression of erupting consciousness. At the Odessa steps, trampling gives
breath to the child. The bullet miraculously reforms the face. The Cossacks
march backwards, retreating unseen into their nothing, the unfired rounds
of their rifles restored to their menacing potential. Feet tread backward
up the steps as the steps themselves collapse in splintering emulsion. The
carriage is set upright.

*Potamkin* will be preceded by the following short films.

*To Live and Die in the Shadows: Meditations on Ferns, Survival, and
Horizontal Gene Transfer* | Shannon Silva | USA | 2021 | 6 minutes
180 million years ago, through a chance horizontal gene transfer, ferns
acquired a much needed light sensor (neochrome) that allowed them to modify
and survive in low light environments. We should all be so lucky.

*The day lives briefly unscented* | Brandon Wilson | USA | 2021 | 5 minutes
A film about ancestry, transformation and loss. Each shot was created by
covering and uncovering the lens with the hand. The footage was then
arranged in a layered sequence so that images interact as they appear and
disappear.

Mills Folly Microcinema in Madison, Wisconsin showcases nationally
recognized experimental film and video art work from the festival and
microcinema circuit. We network with regional filmmakers and organizations
to bring filmmakers and guest programmers to Madison for screenings. And we
incubate local experimental filmmaking by providing screen time at Project
Projection events. Mills Folly Microcinema is funded in part by grants from
Dane Arts and the Madison Arts Commission, with additional funds from the
Wisconsin Arts Board.

PROGRAMME
Musical Performance by Joni Void

*Zéro Gravité*, Jean-Claude Boustros | 1990 | color-b&w | sound | 27 mins
Zero Gravity, is the first film where I set out to deliberately seek out
specific footage to “recycle” as opposed to work with the traditional
“found footage” approach. I spent weeks and months scouring various
archives to screen material in the hope of encountering footage that I
could use. I like to think of this piece as awakening ghosts and spirits
and hallucinations persisting in long forgotten images whose purpose has
waned, and relevancy evaporated. Yet they yearn to tell their stories and
ask of us to see them again for what they never were.

*Tshiuetin*, Caroline Monnet | 2016 | B&W | sound | 11 mins
Take a ride through Northern Quebec and Labrador on Canada’s first First
Nations-owned railway. The Tshiuetin train line extends 132.5 miles from
Emeril, Labrador to Schefferville, Quebec. The majority of passengers on
the train travel regularly for work and family engagements, using the
railroad because road and air transport isn’t possible in the region– a
unique reality that highlights the challenges faced by so many northern
communities today. The Tshiuetin line is a testament to the viability of a
business run by First Nations; one that combines local economic benefits
with respect for the cultural and linguistic heritage of those who
routinely use this service.

*Mobilize*, Caroline Monnet | 2015 | 3 mins
Guided expertly by those who live on the land and driven by the pulse of
the natural world, Mobilize takes us on an exhilarating journey from the
far north to the urban south. Over every landscape, in all conditions,
everyday life flows with strength, skill and extreme competence. Hands
swiftly thread sinew through snowshoes. Axes expertly peel birch bark to
make a canoe. A master paddler navigates icy white waters. In the city,
Mohawk ironworkers stroll across steel girders, almost touching the sky,
and a young woman asserts her place among the towers. The fearless polar
punk rhythms of Tanya Tagaq’s Uja underscore the perpetual negotiation
between the modern and traditional by a people always moving forward.

*Ceremonial*, Caroline Monnet | 2018 | 3 mins 11 secs
Caroline Monnet explores ritual practices among indigenous First Nation
tribes in North America. Here she explains the complexities of depicting
ceremonies that ordinary remain secret from the eyes of the world: “Given
the importance and abundance of ceremonial practices to most Indigenous
communities, there is an inevitable curiosity from the outside world to
‘know’ or ‘see’ how these sacred rituals play themselves out. But can
anything remain sacred and private in a world that demands immediacy and a
projected image of what sells unscrupulously as the truth? Can Indigenous
communities practice their cultural beliefs without the fear of a camera
trying to capture the ceremony? Often, this quest for forbidden knowledge
speaks to ravenous cultural consumerism and a lack of guidance from a
non-Indigenous standpoint. The narrative is built on a collage of original
16mm, 8mm and digital footage pieced together to provide a hypnotic rhythm
that draws us inward to remind us that some ritualistic practices are
confidential and belong exclusively to the communities who perform them.”.

*Ikwé*, Caroline Monnet | 2009 | 4 mins 45 secs
An experimental film that weaves the intimate thoughts of one woman (Ikwé)
with the teachings of her grandmother, the Moon, creating a surreal
narrative experience that communicates the power of thought and personal
reflection

*Gephyrophobia*, Caroline Monnet | 2012 | 2 mins
The Gatineau-Ottawa region is marked by the daily struggles between these
two neighboring communities, whose cultural, political and linguistic
traditions differ. The film Gephyrophobia, an English word for the phobia
of bridges, is a film about movement, landscape, and the tension between
two distinct identities whose common border is the Ottawa River.

trips gone horribly wrong, the films presented tonight are observational
portraits of the people, tall-tales, and (mis)adventures that exist on the

BUNYAN* exposes
the bigger-than-life Depression-era symbol of industrial pride for the
history-erasing blockade that it is, while GRETA SNIDER’S *PORTLAND* recounts
a ‘90s punk-era odyssey of a failed (but comical) escapade from SF to
Portland by freight. Also along with us for the ride are films by
Portland-based VANESSA RENWICK and more!!

9:30pm GMT+2,

*Cinema Theresia: Apichatpong Weerasethakul + Phil Solomon*
This summer, Art Cinema OFFoff is back with an open-air screening,
combining 16mm and digital projection. In the garden of a former convent,
we present a program around the night and the garden. In the spirit of this
old cloister, three of the six films are silent.

Thai filmmaker and artist Apichatpong Weerasethakul granted permission to
show three of his rarely screened short films: *My Mother’s Garden* (2007),
*Blue* (2018) and *Phantoms of Nabua* (2009).

We combine this selection with analog work by Phil Solomon (1954-2019) –
lauded by Stan Brakhage as “the greatest filmmaker of his generation.” We
show the appropriately titled *The Secret Garden* (1988), *The Exquisite
Hour* (1989) and *Nocturne* (1994).

Solomon and Apichatpong share a fascination with dreams, visions and
memories. Here, both emphasize the multi-layered nature of the film image
without allowing it to function as a window that can penetrate a
mysterious, inner world. Nothing is what it seems. The work of Apichatpong
Weerasethakul is shown on DCP, that of Phil Solomon on 16mm film, with
Nocturne being a b&w reversal print.

In collaboration with Kuleshov and Theresia.

Limited Seating, reserve tickets. Entrance through the big front garden. In
case of rain, the screening will take place in the chapel. Bring a sweater
or blanket. Chairs are provided. Garden bar open before and during the
screening.

(co-programmed by Joshua Rievel & Justin Rhody)

NNC presents a collection of short films from the 1980's Cinema of
Transgression / No Wave film movement. The term "Cinema of Transgression"
was initially coined in a manifesto written by Nick Zedd (RIP 2022) &
published in a 1985 issue of his zine, The Underground Film Bulletin. The
film work is often aggressively confrontational & fiercely independent,
created with a clear intention to shock & subvert traditional values. The
night's program will include shorts by Tessa Hughes Freeland, Richard Kern,
Vivienne Dick & Nick Zedd.

*The Carnal Screen: Jack Smith's NORMAL LOVE*
The Carnal Screen is a monthly screening of films from the collection of
the Film-Makers’ Cooperative. In collaboration with the Museum of Sex and
the Roxy Cinema, this series focuses on an alternative image of the body,
of sex, and of intimacy – images that are about individuality and freedom
of expression, rather than standardization and profit. They present
truthful depictions of a vital part of human nature; they facilitate the
cathartic release of repressed anxieties; and they allow us to think
critically and engage in serious conversations about the complex political
issues that surround representations of sexuality in contemporary society.
The Carnal Screen is held at the Roxy Cinema on the last Sunday of every
month at 3 PM. See below for information on the next Carnal Screen program.

Jack Smith, *Normal Love*, 16mm, 1963, 120 min
Feature-length film loosely inspired by horror movies, particularly from
the 1930s and 40s, as well as the work of Dominican-born B-movie star Maria
Montez. Made following Smith's infamous feature, Flaming Creatures
(1962-63), which caught the unfavorable attention of American censors,
Normal Love includes a cast of fantastical characters ranging from a
mermaid, played by Mario Montez—whose stage name was conceived in homage to
the famous actress—and a mummy, enacted by Angus MacLise, the original
drummer for the New York band the Velvet Underground.
