I have gradually been constructing a mailing list which I will use to send out news of my own art and writing. It is taking a while; I have just now sent out the first group of emails. So while I would prefer to give preference to those on the list, I am posting the bulk of that email announcement here and on Facebook now, and it is my intention to do so with future emails, which I am going to try to limit to three or four a year.

Please note that in addition to an announcement of an upcoming Chicago screening of my earliest films, the sixth paragraph, which begins “Fourth,” contains news of, and links to, the “films” I started making on video earlier this year. Were it not for those, I probably would not be posting this to FrameWorks.

This message offers five announcements.

First, I have written a long jeremiad, titled “Our Flattening Culture,” <https://logosjournal.com/2023/our-flattening-culture/> on the current state of the world, how our descent into near-apocalyptic consumerism aided by the Internet has been making us more superficial and more stupid, seeking mindless pleasures. I attempt to contrast such shallowness with my ideas of what the greatest art can offer. I probably care about this the most of anything I have written. It has just been published in an excellent online journal, /Logos/.

Second, some works from my largest art project, /Weeks and Months/, <https://www.fredcamper.com/A/WeeksandMonths/> which started with my taking a group of photographs of a different subject each day for 22 months, are now on my site. Much more will be posted, and some of these prints are also hanging in my studio building <https://www.bridgeportart.com/>.

Third, on October 6 the Chicago Film Society <https://www.chicagofilmsociety.org/> will present a program of my five early 16mm films <https://www.chicagofilmsociety.org/preservation/fred-camper/>, made between 1967 and 1969,  which they are wholly responsible for preserving. I will introduce them and answer questions.

Fourth, just as I was finishing photographing for /Weeks and Months/ at the end of 2022, I found myself thinking ever more urgently about something that had obsessed me for decades, the possibility of making films again, this time using video <http://www.fredcamper.com/A/Interactions/>. So far that is all I have been making this year, and expect to continue and to add many more as they are completed. I certainly believe in them. These are rather different, and less flashy or evidently “innovative” than most “experimental” filmmaking. I believe they can repay multiple viewings. After some months of encouraging a few friends to see them, I am now making them publicly available. Please respect my copyright and post only links to the page on my site, rather than copying and posting them elsewhere.

Finally, I will have a one person show at a small St. Louis gallery, opening February 10, 2024. This may also be accompanied by a screening of my films. More information on this will appear in my second mailing, some months from now.

Thank you for reading this!

Yours,
Fred
