Ron, thanks a lot for citing this.

I would hope the essay would interest everyone on this list, as it is a general argument for how the complexities of the best art can form a thought-engaging answer to the mindless flatness of so much of our mass culture today.

My argument for Hopkins is not about the existence of the specifics of a Christian God, about which I am an extremely doubtful agnostic, but about the complex and surprising effects of the best art of all types.

I just want to register appreciation of Fred Camper's lovely essay on the—general and specific—state of cultural life, "Our Flattening Culture," published recently online in /Logos. /Within the context of the appalling state of things, these appropriate lines appear near the end: [G. M. Hopkins's] poem is in part a shipwreck narrative. It is also a meditation on the dual nature of God, creator of storms and of shelters, violent and kind, who binds our bodies together and can take them apart. The verses' tensions are constantly being altered by evocations of movement, what sometimes feel like rolling rhythms evoking rises and falls of the sea, leading to an "ocean of motionable mind" [. . . ] Neither Fred's words nor mine here are about religion, though there's a family resemblance... His essay is a welcome mid-course port of call, full of critical specificity and genuine sentiment.

Hi,

Wondering if anyone in the USA has a Project-O-Stand they'd be willing to
sell to No Name Cinema?  We could really use 1 or 2.  Looking for the
black-top later models.  We've been watching Ebay, but it's slim-pickins on
there & max price always.  I'm a 39 year old man, I still have a lot of
hopes and dreams, and I'm tired of spending my time looking at online
auctions for weird tables.  Please help me.  Thanks!

Best,
Justin
