I used a Jack Wolfskin smaller internal frame pack, about 35L in size. The
one I had was designed to be in between daypack and overnight size, but
still had a separate compartment in the bottom designed for a sleeping back
that fit my K3 for easy access. I would utilize my fleece and other layers
to wrap the camera, and I had a separate dity bag for film, light meter,
tape, etc. that I would put at the top of my pack. This allowed snacks,
sunscreen, and other liquids in the middle, which I lined with a trash bag
to help out incase anything leaked.

When I worked on a film for the NPS at Rocky Mountain National Park, we
packed an A-Minima, carbon-fiber sticks, and a giant 500mm zoom into my
larger pack to bring to the top of Longs Peak. Really, the weight of the
16mm cameras is such that you'll do your back some favors to get a pack
that allows you to carry the camera low, and has a waist-strap to
redistribute the weight. Most packs made specifically for photo gear don't
account for this - but do look at Lowe and other bags to get ideas. I love
the Lowe Camera bag I found in a Chicago alleyway in new condition, and
utilize it for my DSLR setup.
