Thanks Steve for this information. I am sorry to hear this about Willie. I knew him well during my daze at Canyon Cinema. He was extremely passionate about Super 8mm filmmaking and we had many intense conversations regarding the future of such a format and the longevity of filmmaking in celluloid itself. He gave me one of my first teaching jobs at the New College of California back in the 80s.
I trust there will be a resurrection of interest in the work that he created in Super 8mm. It was quite voluminous. d > On Feb 27, 2024, at 10:59 PM, Stephen Anker <[email protected]> wrote: > >> Dear Framework Friends, > I just learned the sad news from his family, that pioneering Chicano > experimental filmmaker Willie Varela passed away on Saturday, February 24th. > Willie made a large body of Super 8mm and digital work over a span of more > than fifty years, and he had a deeply passionate, total dedication to the > field. > His work ranged from subtle portraits of his family life, reflections on his > home town and dark narrative visions of contemporary culture. > Willie lived in El Paso, Texas, for most of his life, and was rarely > able to travel, but he shared his work on many occasions in several cities of > the country. > Those of us who knew him will miss him greatly. > With best wishes to you all, Steve Anker > >> Frameworks mailing list >> [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]> >> https://mail.film-gallery.org/mailman/listinfo/frameworks_film-gallery.org > -- > Frameworks mailing list > [email protected] > https://mail.film-gallery.org/mailman/listinfo/frameworks_film-gallery.org
