*THE EXPERIMENTAL FILMS OF DICK HIGGINS*
Artist, publisher, and Fluxus co-founder Dick Higgins (1938-98) began
experimenting with film while in college at Yale University, when he
briefly joined a summer stock playhouse and served as the cameraman for a
pornographic venture. After moving to New York City in the late 1950s,
Higgins attended composer John Cage’s course in experimental composition at
the New School and co-founded the New York Audio-Visual Group, which staged
multimedia productions at venues in Downtown New York. Alongside artist Al
Hansen, Higgins embarked on his first cinematic experiments, utilizing
projectors, lights, and electrical circuits. The pair’s endeavors
highlighted their shared love for risk and an element of danger.

Throughout the 1960s and early ’70s, Higgins created a dozen experimental
movies, most of which have only recently been rediscovered and digitized. A
selection of these virtually unknown works will be presented at Anthology.
With the exception of *THE FLAMING CITY* (1961-62), which was occasionally
screened in New York and Europe during the 1960s, the other films in the
program have not been shown in over fifty years. The last recorded
screening of a Higgins film program in New York dates back to November
1969, when the Film-Makers’ Cinematheque presented his works as part of
their “Avant Garde Tuesdays” series at the Jewish Museum.

The series has been guest-programmed by Alice Centamore and Lauren Fulton,
with support from the Dick Higgins Estate. Lauren Fulton is a researcher
and curator based in Lawrence, Kansas. She is an art history PhD candidate
at SUNY Stony Brook where she just completed her dissertation on Higgins,
which in part examines his work in film. Alice Centamore is an art
historian and curator based in Brooklyn, NY. She co-curated a show on Dick
Higgins’s publishing house, Something Else Press, at the Reina Sofïa
Museum, Madrid, in which his films were featured. Special thanks to Hannah
Higgins & Jessica Higgins (Estate of Dick Higgins and the Something Else
Press) and Emily Cushman (MoMA).

“Broughton was and is a poet, sometimes a dramatist. Yet whatever the mode,
his style is remarkably consistent: urbane and witty with the persona of
the naïve, or the simpleton, or the child. Like the poems, the films record
the basic rites of passage, the search for love, the primal relationships,
with ironic insight: there are parents who are children, a rube who’s
really the artist, a loony wise man.” –P. Adams Sitney

Total running time: ca. 75 min.

Lauren Oliver (b. 1992, Forest Hills, New York) is a multidisciplinary
artist working in Brooklyn, New York. Experimenting with photography,
performance, and film making, Oliver's creative practice is deeply rooted
in both the technical and metaphoric significance of light in analog image
making. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in photography from SUNY
Purchase. Her photographs have been featured on i-D, Buzzfeed, F-stop
Magazine, and The Luupe. Her first monograph, “Temple of the Self,”
published by Monolith Editions in 2020, is in the permanent collections of
the Museum of Modern Art and the Thomas J. Watson Library at the
Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 2024, she published her second book, "Puntas
Abiertas," with Matarile Ediciones.

In addition to her artistic practice, Lauren teaches analog photography and
film making at the International Center of Photography, Gowanus Community
Darkroom, and Mono no Aware. In September 2024, she will start her graduate
studies at the Rochester Institute of Technology. MONO NO AWARE SCREENING
SERIES: The CONNECTIVITY THROUGH CINEMA series will present the work of
artists, film-makers and curators who are traveling or presenting special
interactive programs in-person. Our hope is to engage the community by
showing work with a focus on post-screening discussion. This series is made
possible by support from the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA)

*THE GOLDEN POSITIONS* 1970, 32 min, 16mm
“A lovely, poetic, humorous, and crystal investigation of mankind standing,
sitting, and lying down.” –John Wasserman, SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE

*DREAMWOOD* 1972, 45 min, 16mm
“A modern day spiritual odyssey in which a man is mysteriously compelled to
leave his home and embark on a voyage to a strange, magical island. On the
island he faces the most improbable and intense experiences of his life,
ranging from total humiliation to a deep sense of oneness with the force of
life. Heroic in concept, subtle in execution, *DREAMWOOD* is a beautiful
film by a true master of the medium.” –David Bienstock

*HIGH KUKUS* 1974, 3 min, 16mm
“A High Kuku is, of course, a cuckoo haiku. In inventing this form
Broughton has concocted zany verses which are ‘high’ in the sense that they
are often metaphysical and are keenly aware of the metacomedy of things.”
–Alan Watts

Total running time: ca. 85 min.

“Roughly speaking [Breer’s] works belong to that category of films
generally called ‘abstract’ (though his are also highly ‘concrete’), but
differ from everything else that has been done along these lines in one
basic respect: Breer is undoubtedly the first filmmaker to have brought to
his medium the full heritage of modern painting and the sum of
sophisticated experimentation that it represents.” – Noël Burch, FILM

downright unsettling puppetry at our live 16mm film night! Prepare to be
mesmerized by a lineup of puppets so outrageously “bad” they’re
unforgettable. Our special selection includes: *PARENTS: WHO NEEDS THEM?*:
Watch in awe as a magical puppet embarks on a fantastical journey, turning
a little boy invisible to teach him a heartwarming lesson in
gratitude; *LUNCHROOM
MANNERS*: Experience the chaos and hilarity as a mischievous puppet turns a
simple lunch into an uproarious spectacle, reminding us all of the
importance of good manners; *WHAT TADOO?*: Dive into a riveting cautionary
