*Maya Deren. A cadence of images*
Tuesday to Saturday, 10 am to 7 pm GMT+1
Sundays and public holidays, 10 am to 8 pm GMT+1
Closed on Mondays (except public holidays)

The Museu Etnològic i de Cultures del Món presents this temporary
exhibition about Maya Deren and her works. Defined as a filmmaker, writer,
poet, dancer and ethnologist/anthropologist (she travelled to Haiti between
1947 and 1955), Maya Deren is essentially one of the most important
avant-garde filmmakers and a key figure in twentieth-century experimental
cinema.

The many ways in which Deren has been labelled allow us to navigate her
work and subtly allude to the perspective, signs, movements, dances and
symbols that make her work unique and deeply interlinked.

Her filmography is not extensive (six completed projects and several
unfinished ones) and her work —experimental, speculative, intuitive,
poetic, symbolic, visual and seemingly incomplete— consists of various
interwoven fragments that are simply persistent, repetitive tendencies,
albeit meaningful enough to eventually form a coherent whole. One image
becomes another, just as one concept becomes another, threaded together by
the camera or the written word. A constant unfolding of images and texts.
Undoubtedly an inexhaustible cadence.

The exhibition does not follow a chronological order, nor has a
biographical structure. The exposition’s itinerary brings all these
elements together and invites visitors to engage with a ‘poetic’,
enveloping and profoundly visual arrangement which induces choreographic
movement and leads to the final space: the one devoted to her project on
Haiti.

The exhibition runs through her six finished films, as well as some of her
unfinished projects, some of which are displayed in audiovisual format and
others through a selection of stills. Written text comes to the fore in the
final space, which is organised as an ‘archive’. It displays a sequence of
images and texts, as well as a cadence of voices which accompany Deren’s:
the voices of Alejo Carpentier or Edwidge Danticat.

Catalogue
The exhibition comes with a book containing a text written by the curator
and three essays on Haiti by the lecturer in modern and contemporary
history at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona David Martínez Fiol, the
writer Edwidge Danticat and the professor of folklore and comparative
literature at the University of Abuja, Nigeria, Gboyega Kolawole. It
concludes with an extensive biography of Deren.

Inside the book is a fold-out with a selection of stills from Deren’s
films, designed to be opened and displayed as an object, forming the shape
of a star. This visual and textual interplay captures the essence of both
the exhibition and the filmmaker’s work.

*VINYL RITES2*
BRIAN DARR IN PERSON: OPUS (n)ONE + WARM SPELL: MATING RITES +

Comes now our first Live A/V show of the season, a hybrid program that
carries over the record-store theme from last Sat., but blows up the
multi-media aspect into a delirious circus of audiovisual delights.
Long-lost critic Brian Darr is back in his SF hometown for one week only,
so now is thee time to experience his para-cinematic sound-and-image
celebration of the unlikeliest record label of the late 20th Century...a
remote Maine launching pad for obscure avant garde composers, best
remembered for its wild psychedelic covers. The second half belongs to J.
Lee's Warm Spell, a 6-person A/V ensemble using overhead
projectors, rear-projection, shadow puppets, and live musical performance,
to enact their *Pan-Galactic Mating Rites*. Opening are playful riffs from
lo-fi intermedia, including glasses-less 3-D, jug-whistling, the Trololo
Man, and Len Lye's kinetic sculpture.

*Carl Diehl – Painless Magic*
In this 65 minute documentary, Carl Diehl chronicles the histories of his
grand-uncle — the magician, vaudevillian, and comedy emcee, Werner “Dorny”
Dornfield (1892 -1982). This kaleidoscopic account of curiosity,
camaraderie, and creativity shimmers with ephemera from the Golden Age of
stage magic and beyond, and delights with anecdotes from magicians,
historians, & Dorny’s oldest surviving relatives. Dorny established magic
clubs in Chicago in the 1910s and performed soldier-actor gigs across
Europe at the end of WWI. He toured North America with Broadway star Elsie
Janis, was friends with Houdini and Thurston, and orchestrated elaborate
showcases in the Magic Capital of the World.

As with any magic act, misdirection abounds, and *Painless Magic* wanders
into a world bigger than the portrait it first appears to be! Through
conversations with experimental filmmakers, performance artists, musicians,
and philosophers, Carl Diehl unveils shared sensibilities across contexts
of art, magic, & everyday life.

--- SATURDAY MARCH 22, 2025 ---
- PROGRAM 3: MOVING IMAGES (Guest curator Genevieve Yue in person) @ 7:00
PM -
Maybe the title of the program is a bit cheeky. After all, what kinds of
images would appear in a film festival other than those that move? The
images here, however, take movement further, in often unexpected directions.

They accompany travelers, like the boy in Tiffany Sia’s *A Child Already
Knows *(2024), who is too young to understand his family’s escape from Cold
War-era Shanghai, but nevertheless grasps something of the journey in the
cartoon images that float alongside him.

In Malaz Usta’s *space_invaders.exe* (2024), archival footage, videogames,
and a computer-generated voice kaleidoscopically evoke the experience of a
displaced person, just as they themselves are uprooted and denaturalized
from their sources.

The movement of images exceeds that of the filmmaker in Adam Piron’s *Dau:añcut
// Moving Along Image* (2022), which tracks the consumption and circulation
of native American imagery worldwide. In the film’s key example, after a
simple Google search for “ukrainian tattoo american indian chief,” Piron is
surprised to discover the face of his relative emblazoned on the arm of a
Ukrainian soldier.

Finally, multiple speeds and moments of migration are rendered in Callum
Hill’s *Solo Damas *(2016), from women riding the “only women” cars in the
subway, to pilgrims gathering at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in
Mexico City, and, furthest back, the slow glide along the ancient Aztec
waterways of Xochimilco. As these films remind us, the movement of images
is nothing to be taken for granted. Sometimes, they move the viewer along
with them.

- PROGRAM 4: NEAR NOWHERE @ 9:00 PM -
Films about cities that are evolving and animals that are going extinct (or
maybe it’s the other way around). In-between architectures, repetition, and
isolation. At the other end of the transbay tunnel, heaven awaits… or is
that an office cubicle?

*Near Nowhere*, Nora Zubizarreta, 2024, RT: 05:56 minutes

*SISTERS' PICTURES*
LYNNE SACHS + SCHEDELBAUER + KUC

We've assembled a godsmackin' troika of the most superhumanly gifted women
makers of our time, a truly fortuitous curatorial *coup* that coincides
with Sachs' visit to the Bay Area. She is showing a ½ hr. cut from her her
new feature project, *Every Contact Leaves a Trace*, and fielding questions
about her intentions and trajectories with this current long-form. AND:
Old ATA comrade (relocated to Berlin) Sylvia Schedelbauer finally peeps
back up with her 24-min. multi-layered portrait of her mother, also settled
in Berlin (from Japan), an astounding feat of family-archive excavation
(mostly from S8 color!) that is ever-so-meticulously ordered into a
profoundly resonant, and revelatory montage. The third component of this
collective debut comes from Kamila Kuc, the formerly London-based
cine-artiste who has now moved to the Coast, *Her Plot of Blue Sky*. This
jaw-dropping, never-before-seen penetration of Moroccan women's society and
sub-culture (Amazigh)--in fact enabling the women to use cameras(!)--gives
voice to a huge marginalized population who are accustomed to being
shuttled from forced marriage to prostitution to institutionalized old age
dead-ends, by an oppressively patriarchal Arab state.
