For DIY battery power, in most cases I'd forego trying to create a new pack
that fits in an existing compartment, and try to rig a wire out from the
contacts to an external pack, because it's easier work, you can get greater
AH capacity, and you can use a wider variety of cells, including
lithium-ion 18650s which are great if you use the camera regularly. (They
do lose capacity if you let them sit for a long time...)

I look at that German DIY David Kidman linked and I just wonder if the
output of those little NiMH cells are worth the effort. It does kinda
depend on the camera. Years back I discovered you could make a replacement
battery for a Scoopic with 8 NiMH standard AA cells and a generic 8xAA
battery holder, which requires very little effort. But the run time is
still limited, and with any modern cells it's dicey to recharge your new
pack with the NiCAD charger that came with the camera.
