It can be useful to observe how other works approach a subject or theme, mainly because you don't want to fall into copycat mode accidentally. You can also find certain aspects you want to avoid, and find some inspiration in imaging an adverse. But I'll note that a productive technique for a kind of inspiration is to review some "non-traditional" cinematic approaches to completely different topics, and see if the form/style resonates in any way with the subject/theme on your mind. Then try to isolate what part of that is the key, then move that say 90 degrees one way or another to create a more unique fit to your purpose. So a viewer might say, "Hm, I see a little influence of [X] here, but it's fresh and affecting in this context."
