Requiescat to a remarkable filmmaker. I’d been looking around for a copy of
FROM THE POLE TO THE EQUATOR a few years ago for my documentary history class
and was frustrated to find nothing projectable was available in the US.

MoMA had quite a few of their works – KARAGOEZ; FROM THE POLE TO THE EQUATOR;
PRISONERS OF WAR; BALKAN INVENTORY (35mm); ON THE HEIGHTS ALL IS PEACE; PEOPLE,
YEARS, LIFE, possibly others. I’m wondering if there might be a way to
inveigle them despite the inactive status of the library; theirs is certainly
among the more significant bodies of work to be taken out of US circulation by
the closure of that resource.

Many of their works have also been digitized and presented digitally at
various museum exhibitions

years<https://www.museoreinasofia.es/en/activity/yervant-gianikian-and-angela-ricci-lucchi>
(primarily courtesy of Gianikian, I believe) but their work should be seen on
film when possible.

I’d be interested in presenting some of their work next year and would be up
for splitting costs on some overseas materials, should MoMA prove a dead end.

Best,
Michael

Subject: [Frameworks] Yervant Gianikian R.I.P.

Yervant Gianikian just passed away. Posted on multiple Instagram accounts and
confirmed.
Rest in peace.
He and Angela Ricci Lucchi were a wonderful pair of filmmakers. Filmforum at
least had a long history with them. I’ve heard stories from the founder of
Filmforum, Terry Canon, and his wife Mary, when Yervant and Angela would stay
with the to do screenings in the late 1970s of their “scented cinema.” Terry
and Mary would then stay with Yervant and Angela in Italy. The soundtrack to
“From the Pole to the Equator” was done by Keith Ullrich, another habitue of
Pasadena Filmforum. I remember fondly their screening of “O Uomo” at Filmforum
in the late 90s.

Yervant did a small tour of screenings in tribute to Angela in 2019 after she
passed away.
If you haven’t had a chance to see their work, please think about it. But it’s
not currently easy to find in the USA as far as I have been able to find..
Some films were at the MoMA Circulating Library, but that is still closed.
(Anyone have any updates on that?). Canyon Cinema used to have some but no
longer. BFI does have some, including, I learned today, a 16mm print of From
the Pole to the Equator.

Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid has one version of their 2014 film “Frente a
Guernica” which was a commission from the museum.

If anyone knows of additional sources for those or other films of theirs,
please share.

Best regards,

Adam
