Documentary Screening & Poetry Reading at Old Bridge Filmmakers Showcase

Jeremy Newman’s documentary video “The Amnesiac’s Birthday” about bipolar NJ
poet Terri Adamczyk will be screened at the Old Bridge Filmmakers Showcase on
Saturday November 5th at the Old Bridge Public Library.  A poetry reading by
Adamczyk follows this screening.  Local filmmaker Matt Helme is the Old Bridge
Filmmakers Showcase Program Director.

In this hour-long video, Newman explores Adamczyk’s story of familial
dysfunction and reconciliation through the lens of manic-depression.  Her poems
weave biological and situational threads into an indelible tapestry.  She
recounts suicidal thoughts tempered by the love of family, cutting with glass
shards, and recovery through electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).  He borrows the
title from her poem about treatment, memory loss, and re-birth.

“The Amnesiac’s Birthday” examines the nature versus nurture debate, as well as
the intersections between manic-depression, creativity, and faith.  This video
ultimately offers hope for those who suffer from mental illness and their
families.  Adamczyk overcomes adversity through perseverance and courage.  Her
haunting poems probe the depths of despair, yet they represent the triumph of
the human spirit.  Not only is it a miracle that they exist, their fragile
beauty is a testament to her talent and faith.

Jeremy Newman has directed numerous documentary and experimental videos.  His
work is frequently shown at film festivals and has also aired on several PBS
stations.  He is Assistant Professor of Communications at The Richard Stockton
College of New Jersey.  Newman earned an MFA in Media Arts from The Ohio State
University.

Terri Adamczyk earned an MFA in Creative Writing from University of
Massachusetts Amherst.   Her poems are published in “The Philadelphia
Independent” and by theNational Obsessive-Compulsive Foundation.  Adamczyk
reads her poems at venues throughout New Jersey such as the Collingswood Book
Festival.
