The dvx records progressive not just interlaced so you get away from those
interlaced frames. I think you might get a couple of interlaced frames for NTSC
because of the 60i to 24p thing. With PAL though 25p has no interlaced frames
at all. Still if you are in a NTSC region a few interlaced frames is better
than lots and lots at 60i. And as edwin says recording to something other than
tape is an option. You can record straight to your laptop with either the DVX
or XL1 if you want. But then again if the crappy-ness of moribund technology is
what you are after shoot to tape. I have to say though the focus is pants on
the xl1, I speak from experience. The dvx's focus is far superior, more
accurate and if you need the manual focus for your project then the DVX is what
I would personally go for. Because it has the progressive option it's also
somewhat future proof for what it is. You also have the choice of shooting 16:9
or 4:3. However the XL1 is native 16:9. Both are good cams but I would choose
the DVX every time.

i would definitely buy one second-hand. you can pick a canon xl1 up on ebay for
$300-$900, and that's the price for the nicer ones.
i'm sure you know, but the timelapse feature on all mini-dv cameras is pretty
crappy, as they're unable to record single frames due to using tapes and
interlacing. maybe that crappy-ness is what you're specifically after,
otherwise i think cameras like the xl1 might be able to timelapse straight to a
memory card

I'm sure one of the Panasonic DVX100's had the time lapse function. And the
focus ring on the DVX, can't beat it!
