Hi Moira, We have been doing film-chain and then FlashscanHD scanning of R8 and S8 for many years. When we are up against tightly spliced super-8 with presstape splices - that is the only time I wish we were still doing chain transfers! The image quality is so much better with the FlashscanHD, but 6-frame tape splices like presstapes will cause a 12 to 22 frame long vertical shift about 40 frames after the splice (distance between imaging 'gate' and travel encoder). We splice acetate with cement (M-H 816s) and Single-8 with a Neutaper - neither of which cause significant shifts, but the heavier and longer pre-cut, pre-perfed tape splices like the Kodak presstapes cause trouble in many of the modern scanners with capstan drives and travel encoders. These big tape splices have the effect of increasing the diameter of the travel encoder thereby throwing off the framing. The smaller the film gauge, the greater the percentage of shift. If you need to use tape splices and aren't planning to project, base-side-only splices will run well through the FlashscanHD, but with other scanners it will depend on which side contacts the travel encoder. Otherwise, 2-frame wrap-around splices like those from the Neutaper or Wurker splicers cause very little shift. -Good luck! ---Buck Bito
