If this is like many Eikis, it has a rubber sleeve over the focussing knob shaft. When the sleeve deteriorates, it can be replaced with surgical tubing or silicone rubber insulation.
If your projector hasn't been lubed in a while, I would get someone to go through the whole lubrication procedure.
