*Committed* is an experimental narrative and period piece about Frances
Farmer (played by McLaughlin), who was involuntarily committed to mental
institutions in the 1940s. The film focuses on the relationship between
Farmer and her mother, and examines social and political norms of the time,
including the burgeoning use of psychiatry to cure "disturbed" women.
