We are very pleased to announce a special New York preview of “Jonas in the
Jungle” by Peter Sempel. The Hamburg-based filmmaker, who is known for
being present when his work is screened, is in the city briefly shooting
footage for his next film. The 98 minute film, is the 3rd in a series –
after “Jonas in the Desert” (1994) and “Jonas at the Ocean” (2002) –
featuring avant-garde filmmaker Jonas Mekas. “Jonas in the Jungle” had its
world premiere at the Hamburg Film Festival last October and also screened
at the São Paulo International Film Festival.

The footage for the film was shot mostly over the past 10 years at Mekas’
home in Brooklyn, at Anthology Film Archives and during his exhibitions in
Cologne, London, Paris and Berlin.

Featuring Sebastian Mekas, Phong Bui, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Patti Smith (for
the Harry Smith Library), Giuseppe Zevola, Kasper Konig, Martin Scorsese,
Julius Ziz and other friends of Jonas as well as David Carradine and a
black panther.

Music: August Vaukatis, Katrin Achinger, Dirt Bikes, Mozart, Lithuanian
folk songs, Abwärts.

Peter Sempel is a German filmmaker photographer who spent his youth in the
outback of Australia before returning to Germany. He began making films in
1981 through his interest in music. His filmography of short and
documentary works includes: Dandy w/Blixa Bargel, Nick Cave, Lene Lovich
and others; Nina Hagen = Punk + Glory (1999); Lemmy (2002) featuring Lemmy
Kilmiser of Motorhead; 3 works on avant garde filmmaker Jonas Mekas,
“Animals of Art (2011) featuring among others Jonathan Meese, Daniel
Richter, Georg Baselitz, Yoshito Ohno, Peter Broetzmann, Antony & the
Johnsons, Shumann, Razorheads;  and the dance related films Kazuo Ohno:
Dance Into the Light (2004); and Flamenco mi vida (2007). Sempel carries
his films around the world and presents at festivals, special events, in
off-cinemas, discos and all kinds of places. In Germany his films are
distributed by Silver Cine, a small company in Hamburg.
