â[Robert Seidelâs work is] an immersive experience, a sensuous dip into
light, color, movement, sound and change.â
- Los Angeles Times
Robert Seidel (b. 1977) is an international
artist whose video installations, media façades
and experimental films have appeared in
festivals, galleries and museums for more than a
decade. Based in Berlin, Seidel studied biology
before his studies at Bauhaus University Weimar;
his work pushes the boundaries of abstraction to
the sublime through digital methods that combine
scientific visual analysis, painting and
sculpture. In Seidelâs works, organic imagery
shifts in elaborate detail, evolving
structurally in time and space to create
continually unfolding experiences. Projected on
enormous building façades, water fountains, and
even sculptures, or installed in urban streets,
the digital art resonates with aesthetic and emotional complexity.
Produced by Center for Visual Music (Los
Angeles) and Studio Robert Seidel (Berlin),
Robert Seidel: Projections, Installations and
Films collects his major films, videos and
documentation from his globe-spanning
exhibitions. It also includes Seidelâs
experimental films, and as a Bonus Feature, a
45-minute exclusive interview between Seidel and
curator Andre Eckardt of the German Institute for Animated Film (DIAF).
Seidelâs works have been exhibited in museums
such as ZKM, Karlsruhe; Royal Museum of Fine
Arts, Antwerp; Los Angeles County Museum of Art,
Los Angeles; Art Center Nabi, Seoul;
MuseumsQuarter, Vienna; Museum of Image and
Sound, São Paulo; and Museum of Contemporary
Art, Taipei. He has received accolades including
the KunstFilmBiennale Cologne Honorary Award,
Best Experimental Film at Ottawa International
Animation Festival, and an Honorary Mention from Prix Ars Electronica.

âLike many of the most talented computer
animators of his generation, [Richard] Baily's sensibilities
are first and foremost musical.â
- Contemporary magazine
Pioneering visual effects artist, painter and
musician Richard âdr.â Baily (1953 - 2006)
is renowned within the Hollywood industry for
his high-speed rendering software (SPORE) and
the groundbreaking effects he created for films
such as Fight Club (1999), The Cell (2000) and
Solaris (2002). A 1977 graduate of CalArts,
Baily initially joined Robert Abel and
Associates, where, among other accomplishments,
he created trailblazing graphics for Tron
(1982). Forming his own company in 1992, Image
Savant, he continued to create effects for many
Hollywood movies, commercials and music videos.
Center for Visual Music is proud to present
Richard âdr.â Baily and John Buchanan:
experiments in spore, a collection of three
personal art films Baily created outside the
industry. Inspired by filmmaker Jordan Belson
(whose work is also available on DVD from CVM),
whom he called âthe preeminent artist of the
20th century,â Bailyâs undulating,
overlapping patterns of light express a profound
and lingering beauty. Bailyâs work has been
exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art in
Los Angeles, REDCAT, Hammer Museum and many other venues.Â
Baily co-credited his assistant, John Buchanan,
on his film xtacism (2005), and Buchanan also
completed their film, aura (2007). In addition
to these two films, the DVD contains Bailyâs
classic CalArts thesis film, Night Waves (1977),
made with advice from Bailyâs mentor Jules Engel.
