If pure signal is what you want, then a scan converter will add another step in the processing chain that you don't necessarily need. A video card with a proper analog out is ideally what you want, like one of the Blackmagic Decklink cards or a Matrox Mojito. Just offered the DVDplayer to VCR route as a basic solution.
