The Animate OPEN is for complete works by UK and international artists,
animators and filmmakers, produced since January 2014.

We invite submissions of experimental single channel animation work that
relates to the theme Parts & Labour. The theme emphasises the craft – analogue
and digital – of contemporary creative animation practice and is intended to
convey a sense of animation as something that is made and crafted – whether
physically or digitally - and the cultural importance of the artist and maker.
The Animate OPEN will present work in a gallery (our partner, QUAD, in Derby,
UK), online and in cinemas – spaces for contemporary visual arts and cultural
film. Animators today are engaged in extraordinarily diverse activities, across
and between the arts and the creative media industries; animation is a site for
innovation, risk taking and the development of new artistic techniques and
approaches. We are looking for works that explore, question, celebrate, subvert
or confound our expectations. We want to represent a range of creative practice
- bringing together different forms, approaches and perspectives, which
nevertheless connect through their exploration of the concept of animation as
craft. You can opt out of the online exhibition option and ask us to consider
your work for gallery and/or cinema only – please check the box on the form.

We will select up to 20 works for gallery exhibition at QUAD in Derby (from 28
November 2015 – 24 January 2016), for online exhibition and for a cinema
programme as part of Move It, a season of British and international animation,
touring the UK in 2016. A publication will include information about the
selected works and the artists who made them, alongside commissioned writings
that reflect and develop current debates in contemporary animation practice. At
QUAD there will be a programme of related talks and public and professional
workshops.
