GROUPER & PAUL CLIPSON PRESENT HYPNOSIS DISPLAY- A 75 MINUTE SOUND/16MM FILM
PERFORMANCE + ROSS MANNING
"HYPNOSIS DISPLAY envelops the viewer within an expansive sound and image
experience. Both artists use formats that emote sonically and visually unique
momentsócassette tape and 16mm filmówhich combine to create an especially
resonant live environment. The dialogue between these sensitive materials
evokes a dynamic tension between beauty and dissonance. Grouper layers
performed and field recorded music to create hypnotic soundscapes cloaked
within her vocals and tape loops. Clipson's collaged, super-impositioned 16mm
films, projected from within the theatre space, seek to invite the audience to
participate in a collective mind's-eye trip, traversing Grouper's musical
language to create startling, revelatory associations, as if each viewer is
experiencing a hallucinatory waking dream." Hypnosis Display is a commission of
Opera North, Leeds.

GROUPER & PAUL CLIPSON / HYPNOSIS DISPLAY
"A dream-gauzed portal into the psyche of contemporary America, Hypnosis
Display sees an experimental filmmaker and much-loved cult songwriter
collaborating to produce an audio-visual experience or unconscious revelation.
San Francisco-based film artist Paul Clipson's subtle and affecting portraits
of the landscapes in between everyday space are here met by the sonic textures
woven by Portland's internationally acclaimed underground songwriter Grouper
(Liz Harris) Field recordings are layered upon choral harmonies and sewn
through with keyboard airs in a meditation on the myth-making of Americas past
and present. Densely composed and deftly executed, it is an uncanny mirror
capturing the shades of a contemporary realm otherwise left unlit by the media
of our age."-Supersense

ESSENTIAL CINEMA: GENET/FRANK & LESLIE PROGRAM
Jean Genet UN CHANT DíAMOUR 1950, 26 minutes, 35mm, b&w, silent. Jean Genetís
poetic expression of male eroticism pitted against the confines of prison cells
and a homophobic stateÖ a powerfully resonant work that explores individual
freedom and the laws of desire. Robert Frank & Alfred Leslie PULL MY DAISY
1959, 28 minutes, 35mm, b&w. A largely spontaneous experiment, arranged in 1959
by Robert Frank along with Alfred Leslie. They enlisted the participation of
Jack Kerouac, who offered in place of an original screenplay a stage play heíd
never finished writing, ìThe Beat Generation.î The plot is based on an incident
in the life of Neal Cassady and his wife Carolyn. Theyíre raising a family and
trying to fit in with their suburban neighbors, and one night they invite a
respectable neighborhood bishop over for dinner. But Nealís Beat friends crash
the party, and that Marx Brothers-like scenario is the closest thing the film
has to a storyline. Total running time: ca. 60
minutes.
