Ken, If you still have the stock GPU, you could look for a more recent one that is compatible. Likewise, you could upgrade to an SSD instead of a hard-drive, or just a faster spinning one since it sounds like this needs to be replaced anyway (clicking sound would indicate this. Don't wait, replace ASAP).
