This show is a tribute to the passion & history of the venerable Sonoran (MX) punk rock band La Merma!! Opening the night is a screening of Tino Valera’s 2010 documentary La merma, 15 años de camino (The Decline 15 Years Down the Road ) which documents one of the most important punk rock bands on the northern border of Mexico and testifies to their history and outrageous journey of life in a city (Nogales, Sonora ) that “at times seems to vanish” . Three albums, numerous members and fifteen years down the road, this film is a window into the events that moved a generation hungry for identity. The second half of this evening features La Merma’s shouting out the truth and performing live and loud at EV! He is presenting his unique super-8 films (in super-8mm!) with us this evening. In his films, Domingo, aka Stanley Sunday lets his imagination run wild and exposes his own fantastic universe through a highly iconoclast and hilarious associative cascade. His personal imagery includes a series of popular artifacts and icons such as Disney films, Michael Jackson, picture-card albums, comic-book superheroes, cassettes… There is also a homoerotic imagery and a series of recurring motifs with an explicit sexual symbology, such as the phallic Frankfurt Weiner, which has become his trademark. By combining footage taken from classic films or B-movies with his own shootings, and abstract moments with life-action scenes played by his own “star-system”, David Domingo deconstructs normal hierarchies and cause-effect approaches in order to generate a continuous flow of images which create surprising and enigmatic associations. For Dean, film emulsion is a living tissue that can engender unsurpassed, vibrant experiences of light and rhythm, and she has been a passionate champion of the endangered medium. Working with a deeply contemplative aesthetic, her portrayals of artists and phenomena extend the literal into poetic dimensions. The youngest artist ever to be given a solo show at Tate Britain in 2001, Dean has exhibited at museums throughout the world, including the Hammer Museum two years ago, and she has produced over 50 films. Rybczyński was born in Poland in 1949 and graduated from the Lodz Film School; he has worked as a film director in Europe and the United States, making acclaimed art films (Steps, Tango, KAFKA) and was an early innovator of music video (Art of Noise, Mick Jagger, Jimmy Cliff, Pet Shop Boys, Lou Reed). Rybczyński recently relocated to a ranch near Tucson where he is building a new, high technology cinematography studio. This evening’s event will be will consist of a presentation of highlights of Rybczyński’s wide body of media production, a documentary on his advanced cinematic compositing studio that was recently built in Poland and a rare opportunity to participate in a conversation with the artist. In the Shadow of Paul Bunyan criss-crosses the outsized myth of the jolly logger with the hidden history of the US-Dakota Indian War, told from the perspective of a native Minnesotan. Today I Am Going to Kill Myself but First I Am Going to Dance is Nik’s other Midwestern historiography, in this case about an immense insane asylum in Fergus Falls, where he excavated the ghosts in the graveyard and the local community that keeps their memory alive.
