ICP: WILKE/FREED/BENGALIS/WARHOL PROGRAM
Featuring two artists from ICPís exhibition, Wilke and Benglis, this program
presents forms of performance for the camera by artists interested in the
visual and conceptual presentation of the self and the body. Wilke performs a
striptease in front of Marcel Duchampís ìThe Bride Stripped Bare by Her
Bachelors, Evenî (also known as ìThe Large Glassî). A very self-conscious
performance, it slyly mocks the portrayal of women in art ñ stripped bare by
their artists, even. In TWO FACES, Hermine Freed creates a double of herself in
a split-screen, and kisses and coddles the reflection ñ a self-examination in
the face of cultural representations and expectations of femininity. Lynda
Benglisís NOW, included in the original Castelli-Sonnabend video art
collection, features Benglis performing in front of her pre-recorded image,
playing with the idea of a ëliveí performance, and questioning the role of the
performer versus director as she alternates between the cues, ìStart recording
now!î and ìDo you wish to direct me?î Andy Warholís OUTER AND INNER SPACE is a
mesmerizing double-projection, starring his Superstar Edie Sedgwick, and the
first of Warholís experiments with a split screen. Each of the projections
presents Edie doubled: ëliveí Edie side-by-side with a pre-recorded video image
of herself in profile, appearing to speak into her own ear. Highly self-aware
of her presentation, Edie performs her superstar persona for the camera while
hearing her own earlier performance. It is a dizzying rupturing of filmic time
and an inspired exercise in the reflexivity of new media. These works
constitute early video examinations of how the camera changes our way of
presenting the self, decades before a plethora of apps could broadcast oneís
performance to the world. Hannah Wilke HANNAH WILKE THROUGH THE LARGE GLASS

PETER HUTTON, IN MEMORY
Peter Hutton (1944-2016) was a revered filmmaker and teacher whose life and
work had a lasting impact on generations of moving-image artists. His films,
which he modestly compared to looking at photo albums or daydreaming, are
remarkably reserved, often creating profoundly moving portraits of cities and
landscapes from little more than subtly shifting plays of light. His themes
were focused and fewóthe city, the sea, and the landscape, especially the
Hudson River Valleyóand he brought a keen eye to them all, producing luminous
images that seem to float upon the screen. Los Angeles Filmforum at MOCA will
honor Huttonís life and work with a screening of five of his most memorable
films and personal reflections from fellow filmmakers and colleagues, including
James Benning and Steve Anker. INFO [email protected] or 213.621.1745 TICKETS

JENNIFER WALSHE PROGRAM
JENNIFER WALSHE ñ AN GL…ACHT by CaoimhÌn Breathnach & Jennifer Walshe 2015, 30
min, digital ARTIST IN PERSON! Outsider artist CaoimhÌn Breathnach (1934-2009)
lived as a recluse in Knockvicar, Co. Roscommon, Ireland, for all of his life.
Breathnachís artistic practice focused on the creation of ësubliminalí tapes
and films which he believed possessed the capacity to shift consciousness. In
these works, Ogham magickal scales, crystallography, astronomy, folklore, and
natural phenomena are combined with found audio and visual material to produce
an idiosyncratic, esoteric system of correspondences. Breathnach spent the last
years of his life planning a work called AN GL…ACHT. The work was to combine
subliminal tapes and films with filmed footage showing a sequence of occult
rituals. In 2015, responding to a commission from the Cork Film Festival,
Breathnachís great-niece, Jennifer Walshe, brought AN GL…ACHT to completion,
and the result is an idiosyncratic marriage of enigmatic,
evocative imagery and a hypnotic, elemental soundtrack of non-verbal
vocalizing. An experimental composer and artist whose work has been presented
all over the world, Walshe has performed in collaboration with numerous
musicians and artists, including the late, great avant-garde musician, artist,
and filmmaker Tony Conrad, with whom she formed the duo, Ma La Pert. She will
be here in person for this very special event, presenting AN GL…ACHT as well as
other short moving-image works, with live musical accompaniment. CaoimhÌn
Breathnach & Jennifer Walshe AN GL…ACHT (2015, 30 min, digital) With additional

SHOW & TELL: DAVID DANIELS
During the golden era of MTV, David Daniels directed everything from sparkling
animation highlights for Peter Gabrielís groundbreaking music video BIG TIME
(1986) to now-classic station bumpers. Working many seasons as a cameraman and
animator on PEE WEEíS PLAYHOUSE, his distinctive Strata Cut work would also
shine in show openings for MTVís THE IDIOT BOX (1990-91), the title sequence
for the feature length film FREAKED (1993), an insane 40-number countdown for
SESAME STREET, and reverse-animated stop motion clips for Michael Jacksonís
MOONWALKER (1988). While in art school at CalArts (MFA, 1983), Daniels
re-invented conventionally understood clay animation into something completely
fresh and brain-boggling. Using clay as spatially pre-programmed motion
sculpture blocks, he mastered a process by which he invisibly peeled back
colorful thin deli meat slices to reveal a highly textured interior cauldron of
ëpsychomorphicí kinetic (ins)animation. This method, which heís
continued to work with, is powerfully ëwovení in geometric time/space to be
both visually seductive and actively frantic when cut apart, a frame at a time.
He forces narrative clarity out of rolling sheets of rainbow hailstorms and
flowing surfaces of confetti confusion. His graduate thesis film BUZZ BOX
(1985), which took four years to complete, was conceived as a total visual
assault that mimics the blast of images projected daily by the media extended
over a week of strata-cut animated bursts. The effect is at once fluid and
jarring. Presented at the Kitchen in 1986, it remains both experimental and
state of the art even today. For this Show & Tell program we welcome Daniels to
Anthology to present a plethora of nuggets from the last 30 years, including a
treasure-chest of rarities, behind-the-scenes ëhow toí videos,
computer-generated strata tests, real un-cut clay blocks, and some live
time/sculpture examples. ìNew viewers began to look at my work as somehow
computer
generated, which defeats the purpose of blowing peopleís minds, no? But during
the 80s and early 90s the mind-eff was self evident ñ how the *bleep* was this
actually made?î ñDavid Daniels The program will include: BUZZ BOX (1985/2005,
9.5 min, video) ACID TRIP (2000, 40 sec, video) PEE WEEíS PLAYHOUSE COLUMBUS
(1987, 30 sec, video) PEE WEEíS PLAYHOUSE 4th of JULY (1987, 20 sec, video)
AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL (1990, 30 sec, video) MICHAEL JACKSONSíS ABC (1988, 15
sec, video) IDIOT BOX (Title Sequence) (1991, 40 sec, video) PETER GABRIELíS
BIG TIME INTRO (1986, 30 sec, video) BIG TIME STRATA CUTS (excerpts) (1986, 30
sec, video) CLEARASIL (1995, 20 sec, video) MTV ëPIECE OF CAKEí (1993, 10 sec,

Fleurdujon (in person) manages to capture thee genuine San Fran spirit in his

of puppets into an international touring New Vaudeville sensation, the Yard
Dogs. Flecher, Zebu Recchia, and Miguel Strong gathered up a freaky tribe of

underground tradition, who barely survived 2 tech crunches, and then who
summoned up the guts to take their Dionysian carnival on the road in a big

SHAPESHIFTERS CINEMA PRESENTS THAD POVEY AND MARK TAYLOR WITH HENRY PLOTNICK
The Octoplayer is a sound and performance sculpture that plays eight vinyl
records at once. The machine simultaneously (and independently) came in dreams
to artist-tinkerers Thad Povey and Mark Taylor in late 2010. After comparing
their separate visions and sketches, the two decided to collaborate on the
design and fabrication of the shared hallucination. This program, titled
Chronicle of a Dream Device, features a selection of recent videos by Povey and
Taylor, some newly imagined with live Octoplayer accompaniment. The evening
includes a special guest appearance by improvisational keyboard wunderkind,
Henry Plotnick.
