THE FILMS OF FERRY RADAX: PROGRAM 2
One of the artists Radax knew from the postwar art scene in Vienna was the
painter and architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Radax suggested a series of
portraits to Austrian public television, and the inaugural program, which was
initially supposed to feature someone else, became the film HUNDERTWASSER.
KONRAD BAYER is a posthumous portrait of Bayer, and combines interviews with
some of the writer's friends with a narrative featuring figures from Bayer's
texts. HUNDERTWASSER (1966, 26 min, 16mm) & KONRAD BAYER, OR: THE WORLD AM I
AND THAT'S MY BUSINESS / KONRAD BAYER ODER DIE WELT BIN ICH UND DAS IST MEINE
SACHE (1969, 52 min, 16mm-to-digital, b&w)

THE FILMS OF FERRY RADAX: PROGRAM 3
THE HEAD OF VITUS BERING is a short film concerning Konrad Bayer and his
writing on the 18th-century explorer Vitus Bering. It was shot on a ship docked
at Hamburg only a day before the filming of Radax's Thomas Bernhard portrait in
1970. BERG BERG is another work based on a Konrad Bayer fragment. It is the
only Radax film centered on a female protagonist, and can be considered an
experimental take on the haunted house genre. THE HEAD OF VITUS BERING / DER
KOPF DES VITUS BERING (1971, 26 min, 16mm-to-digital, b&w. Exhibition copy
courtesy of the Austrian Film Museum.) & BERG BERG (1973, 43 min,

THE FILMS OF FERRY RADAX: PROGRAM 4
This program features two films Radax made as part of an effort to establish a
new form of narrative cinema in Austria. GROSSE LIEBE attempts to condense a
feature-length concept down to a radically shorter format, in this case the
story of a man following his departed love into the underworld. In TESTAMENT,
Austria has fallen prey to tyranny again, resulting in a civil war. Made in
1968, its irony proved prophetic, as that year of cultural change and turmoil
remained confined, in Austria, to the artistic underground, and did not
ultimately pose a revolutionary threat. GROSSE LIEBE (1966, 26 min, 35mm, b&w)
& TESTAMENT (1968, 42 min, 16mm)

THE FILMS OF FERRY RADAX: PROGRAM 5
Radax worked as a jazz pianist in American bars in the early 1950s and studied
as a singer as well. Music plays a vital role in most of his films, but the
first film to make this explicit is 1986's CAPRI - MUSIC THAT FADES AWAY. When
a composer visits the island seeking inspiration for his work, Capri becomes
the stage for a surreal meeting of characters and myths, with appearances from
Friedrich Nietzsche, Ferdinand II, Pontius Pilate, and the protagonist's own
doppelgänger. CAPRI - MUSIC THAT FADES AWAY, OR: THE STRANGE JOURNEY OF CYRILL
K. / CAPRI - MUSIK DIE SICH ENTFERNT, ODER: DIE SELTSAME REISE DES CYRILL K.
(1984, 103 min, 16mm-to-digital)

THE FILMS OF FERRY RADAX: PROGRAM 6
In the late 1960s Radax contacted Thomas Bernhard, in the hopes of making a
filmic adaptation of his early novel, GARGOYLES. The WDR television station
only agreed to finance a portrait, whose scenario Bernhard at first approved
but then abandoned on the first day of filming. Forced to improvise, Radax
persuaded Bernhard to consent to a long interview on a park bench, and the
result was THOMAS BERNHARD - THREE DAYS. Bernhard was impressed by the final
product, and later agreed to write a short text for Radax to film: DER
ITALIENER reflects Bernhard's approach to Austrian history. Its
post-feudalistic setting becomes a backdrop for a flood of words and gestures
that (in a typically Bernhardian strategy) serve mainly to avoid the issues at
hand. THOMAS BERNHARD - THREE DAYS / THOMAS BERNHARD - 3 TAGE (1970, 52 min,
16mm-to-digital, b&w) DER ITALIENER (1971, 80 min, 16mm-to-digital)

THE FILMS OF FERRY RADAX: PROGRAM 7
Despite Radax's lifelong interest in James Joyce, it took him several decades
to make WHO ARE YOU MR JOYCE? An odyssey set at a Joyce convention, it
represents a very different approach to the portrait-film format. Setting
expert talking heads in counterpoint to a figure who claims to be Joyce
himself, Radax attempts to wrest Joyce away from an academic tradition that
threatens to rob him of his vital force. VIDEOGRAPHIE I comprises the first
part of Radax's still-ongoing autobiographical work. It's a video essay
approaching the past though biographical sites that Radax revisits. WHO ARE YOU
MR. JOYCE? / WER SIND SIE MR. JOYCE? (1981, 73 min, 16mm-to-digital)
VIDEOGRAPHIE I - VESTENÖTTING 1945 (2007, 46 min, digital)

A LETTER TO THE WORLD: EXPERIMENTS IN ESSAY FILMMAKING
Friday, Sep 8 at 10:00 am – Sunday, Sep 10 at 5:00 pm. From Chris Marker and
Agnes Varda to Travis Wilkerson and Trinh T. Minh-ha, filmmakers and artists
have been using the genre of essay filmmaking to explore new modes of blending
fact, fiction, and experience to capture essential truths. A constantly
evolving and flexible form, essay films are used to document cultural and
historical moments, evoke a feeling, unravel an auto-biography, and respond to
critical social turning points with a challenging mix of traditional
documentary conventions, personal nuance and experimental artistry. Join
UnionDocs and filmmaker Lynne Sachs to explore the history, theory and practice
of this shape-shifting genre. Open to filmmakers, students, artists, scholars
and more, this three-day intensive enables artists to articulate their ideas
and explore new methodologies in crafting their work.

AVANT 17: BODIES AND BOUNDARIES
AVANT – Bodies and Boundaries 2017.09.08 – 2017.09.09 Karlstad, Sweden The 14th
edition of AVANT focus on bodies and boundaries. The body is both our most
private territory and a social interface, a boundary that both divides and
unites. The point of departure of AVANT is in one of the most legendary artists
when it comes to the socio-political dimensions of the body, VALIE EXPORT,
followed by Jayne Parker’s early performance-based films. The theme of the body
and its boundaries, as social body and embodiment of inner states and feelings,
is followed up by focusing on external mechanisms of making boundaries; fences,
border controls and the politics of immigration. The theme is introduced
through the premiere of Gunvor Nelson’s latest film, ON THE FENCE, and
concludes with a program by artist duo Minna Rainio and Mark Roberts. AVANT
begins on Friday evening at Kristinehamn Art Museum by artist talks with VALIE
EXPORT and Jayne Parker. Saturday opens at cinema Arenan in
Karlstad with a screening of films and videos by VALIE EXPORT and Jayne Parker.
After this follows two new works by Gunvor Nelson and a program with videos by
Minna Rainio and Mark Roberts. AVANT has been organized since 2002 and the 14th
edition is a collaboration between Världsalltet, Kristinehamn Art Museum,
Karlstad and Stockholm University. AVANT17 is sponsored by Karlstad University,
Karlstad Municipality, Kristinehamn Art Museum, Region Värmland and the Swedish
Film Institute. The full program is available at:

Schaller: In the Shadow of Marcus Mountain/ Lindsay McIntyre: In the
Backyarden/ Amanda Thomson: Good Night Birthday///// "When viewed from Point
Grey the North Shore Mountains take on the silhouette of a sleeping woman. This
idea has followed me around for at least a decade. In 2014 I made Sleeping
Mountains Lie in response, but she persisted. For the last couple of years I
have been working on a film, that reworks the theme set out in SML, reuses its
opening shot and finishes by taking it further East. Who is this woman, what
have we made of her, where is her voice? This program does not answer these
questions, as I hope the forthcoming film will. Instead it lends what I have
tentatively titled “The Mountain’s View” some context."

MATT MCCORMICK'S BUZZ ONE FOUR +
OC inaugurates its 32nd year with the Cali premiere of McCormick’s highly
anticipated magnum opus—a meticulously crafted hour account of an A-Bomb-laden
B-52 that crashed outside of Washington DC!! This still-classified chronicle is
finally coming to our screens because...the pilot was Matt’s grandfather! Matt
himself flies in from Oregon to introduce this astonishing tale—a personal
essay-cum-morality play about the criminal negligence of the Air Force and the
utterly stoopid waste of lives and resources that was the Cold War. Veritable
pillar of Portland’s Peripheral Produce community, the much-missed McCormick
also shares some of his sublime shorts—Future So Bright and The Motion Makes Me
Last—after an opening-reception montage of military follies.

RESTORED RESITUATED RECALCITRANT REGURGITATED REGENERATED REMNANTS
Live expanded cinema performance by Peter Cramer & Jack Waters Taking form and
inspiration from a series of actions and happenings by Cramer and Waters as
well as other artists and collaborators in New York in the 1980s, the work was
first presented under the title “Remnants” at Cinema Village 20 years ago as
part of MIX Festival 10. The “modular, evolving, morphing site specific” piece
features multiple overlapping projections of Super 8mm and 16mm films, 35mm
slides, and video onto walls and a large hanging canvas sheet along with
improvised live interventions by the artists. Utilizing at its core “leftover”
stock and original footage culled from the artists’ visual archives as well as
erotic outtakes from their films and digital additions from the present time,
the performance encompasses among its main themes the attacks on the legendary
center for art and activism ABC No Rio by New York’s Housing Preservation and
Development Department (HPD), the realization of
AIDS-defining illnesses in their community and the burgeoning of AIDS and Queer
activism, and the fun at their LES home and at Le Petit Versailles – a
community garden and non-profit art space the two have been running since 1996
– with Kembra Pfahler, Carl George and other friends. Additional footage
includes Gay Pride and ACT UP marches; Allen Ginsberg’s memorial service at St.
Mark’s Church; fountains, churches, and museums of Rome, Munich and Heidelberg;
and documentation of previous performances of the work. The cacophonous
soundtrack is a live mix of classical music, disco, funk, industrial, rock,
excerpts from Jesse Jackson’s 1992 election speech, and messages from their
home and ABC NoRio answering machines – with unintentional voice cameos by
Sarah Ferguson, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’ secretary, and others.General
admission $10, Members & Students $8. More info: www.microscopegallery.com.

SHAPESHIFTERS CINEMA PRESENTS ORACLE PLUS
Oracle Plus penetrates the psyche with synchronized pseudo-science performance
using video and sound installation. Collaborators (and sisters) Miel and Steph
Lister experiment with moving and touchable images, drawing dreams behind your
eyelids. For Shapeshifters they will be expanding their 2016 performance “Space
Funeral,” a meditative collective funeral procession which seeks to bridge
worlds, hold space for mourning and bring to life the shadows of death. Working
with both physical and metaphorical layers, they seek to add and take away
these layers to unmask the myriad of dimensions that are shimmering
simultaneously. Under the mask there is only another mask.
