It features two days of talks and presentations from international scholars, researchers, curators, archivists, students and artists, plus a special Closing Event.* The accompanying screenings* series presents 5 programs of historic and new visual music work, including rare and restored films by Oskar Fischinger and Len Lye, and new work from international artists. Center for Visual Music is pleased to present this symposium in association with Sonoma State University at their Rohnert Park campus in Sonoma County, CA. Opening and closing receptions are off-campus; the closing event and screening August 16 is in collaboration with Sebastopol Center for the Arts. Topics explored during the event include: audiovisual art, music visualization, Oskar Fischinger, Norman McLaren, color organs, mapping musical scores, 1960s psychedelic light shows, art history & visual music, sonification, IML & visual music performance, hybrid analog/digital live performance, oscilloscopes, preserving video processing instruments, John Cage, James Whitney and much more. Also featured are several video spotlights, including never-seen footage of Barbara Fischinger demonstrating Oskar Fischinger's Lumigraph. Program info, schedule and registration info are at centerforvisualmusic.org/Symposium <http://centerforvisualmusic.org/Symposium> *Details on the Screening Series:* The 5 program Screening Series from CVM includes rare films by Len Lye; the return of the popular Optical Poetry: Oskar Fischinger Retrospective, a program of Treasures from the CVM Archive in 16mm, a program of Oskar's Legacy: Films Influenced by Fischinger (Spinello, Bute, Chris Casady, Michel Gagne, Jeff Scher, Eric Leiser, Neubauer and more); a program of Restorations, Rarities and Discoveries (restored films by Fischinger, Lye, Belson, Bruce Conner, Dockum, Lebrun and others), a program of New Visual Music featuring the US premiere of Max Hattler's new film* Matter and Motion;* and films by contemporary artists including Steve Woloshen, Robert Seidel, Sean Capone, Bret Battey, Oerd van Cuijlenborg, Richard Baily, Paul Prudence, Paul Fletcher, Sabrina Gross, Kurt Laurenz Theinert, Michel Levy, Steve Wood and others). A special Screenings Pass is available now, 4 screenings for $20 (early bird price, for those not attended the Symposium); 4 screenings are also included in the full Symposium Registration. This screening features newly restored and rare 16mm prints from CVM Archive, by masters of Visual Music Oskar Fischinger, Mary Ellen Bute, Len Lye, Norman McLaren, Jordan Belson, Jules Engel, Jud Yalkut and more. This special event is presented by Center for Visual Music, in collaboration with Sebastopol Center for the Arts. This is a separate ticketed event, tickets are limited.
