On the smaller scale, I love the approach of young Chinese director by Liu Jiayin in her "Oxhide II." She made a film about her family life with her mother, father, and herself by highly structured means: in the camera, the shots, and the characters. They wrote their parts and rehearsed being themselves for months. Liu Jianyan said in a Q & A that the results were much more the "truth" of her family life than any verité shooting she'd tried.
