THE GRAND BIZARRE
odie Mack in person! Jodie Mack is an internationally recognized experimental 
animator who combines the formal techniques and structures of abstract/absolute 
animation with those of cinematic genres. Her handmade films use collage to 
explore the relationship between graphic cinema and storytelling, and the 
tension between form and meaning. A mixture of musical documentary and 
stroboscopic effect, Mack’s films study domestic and recycled materials to 
illuminate the elements shared between fine-art abstraction and mass-produced 
graphic design. The works unleash the kinetic energy of overlooked and wasted 
objects and question the role of decoration in daily life.

OCT.19: JAMES SCHNEIDER’s PUNK THE CAPITAL Long-time OC ally James June 
Schneider (1,2,3 Whiteout) remains an invaluable underground source, and 
bi-national non-fiction master, on the Washington watch. With essential help 
from small-gauge guru Paul Bishow, James has finally pulled together their 
long-awaited doc about the seminal years when punk broke in DC, with powerful 
new sounds and radical attitudes, thanks to bands like Minor Threat, Bad 
Brains, and the Void (Chris Stover in person). Tonight James is here in the 
flesh with the West Coast’s first look at how the DC scene gained momentum, and 
an affirmative, generous, and creative community emerged. An artists’ co-op 
called Madam’s Organ was a space of possibility, like punk itself, where 
generations and musical genres mixed, eventually becoming the launch-pad for 
Washington’s harDCore movement. Newly discovered footage and in-depth personal 
accounts afford fresh perspectives on how the impact of that music and those 
ideas eventually grew to resonate world-wide. *$8

A SONG DISSOLVED IN THE DAWN: FILMS BY PHIL SOLOMON, PROGRAM 1
Phil Solomon (1954-2019) was an immensely passionate, inspiring, and 
kind-hearted figure to so many who encountered him and his work. He inhabited 
this world as a generous friend, dedicated teacher and mentor, and as an artist 
of profound talent and feeling, whose films have inspired countless over the 
decades. Los Angeles Filmforum has hosted Phil Solomon on a few occasions over 
the years, and he was always one of our favorite guests, presenting programs of 
great personality and memorable, lingering emotionality. So although it is with 
great sadness that we now present a memorial program for our departed friend, 
we know that Phil would be so pleased at the thought of his beautiful work 
continuing to inspire new viewers. This program focuses on what might be 
considered the more intimate, inward-looking side of Phil’s work. These are 
films that come from very personal places, which nevertheless bloom into more 
universal and empathic experiences shared with us through Phil’s nuanced 
command of montage, mood, and manipulation of the photographic image. Including 
his widely beloved breakthrough films The Exquisite Hour and Remains to be 
Seen, this program will also feature some lesser-seen rarities such as The 
Lateness of the Hour, What’s Out Tonight is Lost, and the delicate and 
little-known As if We. It will be an evening of genuine cinematic poetry as we 
celebrate the life and work of a very special artist and friend. Screening:

through the unrecoverable. The film is a reflecting pool where vision breaks

clouds, embracing fear. The film has a surface of cracked porcelain and 
intaglio: the allergic childhood skin of cracks and bruises. This is a film of

JONAS MEKAS, PROGRAM 2: A WALK
WTC HAIKUS (Filmed 1977-95/edited 2010, 14 min, 16mm-to-digital) Looking 
through my finished and unfinished films, I was surprised how many glimpses of 
the World Trade Center I caught during my life in SoHo. I had a feeling I was 
Hokusai glimpsing Mount Fuji. Only that it was the World Trade Center. The WTC 
was an inseparable part of my and my family's life during my SoHo period from 
1975-95. My method in constructing this piece was simply to pull out images of 
the WTC from my original footage, while including some of the surrounding 
scenes. The result I felt came close, albeit indirectly, to what in poetry is 
known as the Haiku. A WALK 1990, 58 min, digital On a rainy day, I have a walk 
through the early SoHo. I begin my walk on 80 Wooster Street and continue 
towards the Williamsburg bridge, where, 58 minutes later, still raining, my 
walk ends. As I walk, occasionally I talk about what I see or I tell some 
totally unrelated little stories that come to my mind as I walk. This video was 
my early exercise in the one-shot video form. There are no cuts in this video.

ISMO ISMO ISMO: SUPERFICIES ALTERADAS
Altered Surfaces: Psychedelia and Abstraction Abstraction has been a recurring 
strategy in Latin American visual cultures since long before the European 
Conquest. Over the past century, and often in dialogue with artists elsewhere, 
Latin Americans working in diverse media have explored both abstraction, or in 
the case the concrete art movement, who rejected the term “abstract” art as too 
suggestive of a link to a figurative realm that is being abstracted, “pure” 
explorations of color and form. Not surprisingly, filmmakers have participated 
actively in this process of exploration, often in collaboration with artists 
from other media. Enrique Pineda Barnet’s 'Cosmorama' (1964) uses the kinetic 
sculptures of the Romanian-Cuban artist Sandú Darié Laver as a point of 
departure. Other filmmakers proceed from urban and architectural references, 
such as the Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Teo Hernández’ 'Nuestra señora de Paris' 
(1981-1982), and render these in ways that cross back and forth between 
abstraction and recognizable representations, while still others reference the 
altered sensory perceptions and exaggerated color palettes of psychedelic 
experiences. Laborde’s 'As Within So Without' documents the reflective surfaces 
of the filmmaker’s inscrutable sculptures. Together, like the diverse 
approaches of the concrete, neo-concrete, geometric abstraction, “grupo Madí,” 
“grupo ruptura,” and other movements in the visual arts, these filmmakers 
pursue colors, light, shadows, and forms as the basis for their work. La

recurrente en diversas manifestaciones culturales previas a la conquista 
europea. Durante el siglo XX surgieron en América Latina diversos movimientos 
artísticos centrados en la geometría y la abstracción. Estos cineastas, al

EYES ON ELSEWHERES
Presented during the 12th edition of the Imagine Science Film Festival in NYC 
(Oct 18-25), this companion program expands upon the festival’s 2019 theme of 
EMERGENCE: the ability of simple parts acting together to give rise to 
complicated properties unobserved in the parts alone, whether on the level of 
chemical interactions or universal social change. Through this program of films 
we’ll ask how do we observe that which we cannot experience directly? Whether 
searching the surfaces of distant planets or peering into the quantum world, 
science seeks to extend our perception ever further. But the further we seek, 
the more perception, always subjective, may become a metaphor for reality. What 
is the truth, even, of a photographic image? Centered on The Other Side of 
Mars, a philosophical feature study of the exploration and documentation of the 
surface of Mars via robotic rover, along with films set in CERN and on the 
moon, this program asks questions at the top levels of scientific theory: of 
how much we can ever hope to know. For María Molina Peiró, Semiconductor and 
Minna Långström, this manifests through the photographs of astronaut Charles 
Duke, humanity’s place at the European Organization for Nuclear Research and

This month we present Hallowe’en Super 8 Spooktacular, specially devised to 
help you get in the Halloween spirit! We’ll be screening a grab bag of classic 
and B­-Grade horror flicks from EPFC’s formidable Super 8 collection. Expect 
swamp men, vampires, mummies, werewolves and a few unconvincing rubber monster 
masks. Featuring LIVE MUSICAL ACCOMPANIMENT! Plus candy. Lots of candy.

OCT.26: REVIVAL OF EVIL + UNARIUS + SUB-GENIUS + Holy crap! For our annual 
Halloween SPOOKTACULAR, we couldn’t get any freakier than the contemporary 
hellscape of “alt religion”...and here is a veritable Flood of eschatological 
SPEW and wide-eyed WHEW!! We’ve got Pat Boone speaking in tongues, clips of 
Poke Runyon’s Magic of Solomon, Holy Ghost Hysteria, Mark of the Beast, Cult 
Explosion, the ever-visionary adventures of our flying-saucer/past-lives pals 
Unarius, and a couple clips (Arise!, X-Day Drill) from the Texas Slack sect 
with strong connections to SF, The Church of the Sub-Genius! Praise Bob!! The 
night’s 16mm high/low point is a conspiratorial section from Jeremiah Films’ 
ultra rare, utterly wicked Revival of Evil, with intro by collector Anthony 
Buchanan. ALSO the Mormon Ancient America (claiming Jesus preached in 
Meso-America), the post-Mormon doomsday sect Nesara, 700 Club on Burning Man’s 
Satanic connections, Joe Schimmel on backward-masking, black magic, sorcery, 
and witchcraft, and the energized rants and intra-Christian attacks of many 
other bizarre belief-systems. DJ Mysterious Music Meister will be spinning the 
vinyl backwards, of course, as well as dispensing free trick-or-treats! *$6.66

LITHUANIA AND THE COLLAPSE OF THE USSR 2008, 289 min, digital This video is 
made up of footage that I took with my Sony from the television newscasts 
during the collapse of the USSR, with the home noises in the background. It's a 
capsule record of what happened and how it happened during that crucial period 
as recorded by the television newscasters. It can be also viewed as a classic 
Greek drama in which the destinies of nations are changed drastically by the 
unbending, bordering on irrational, will of one single man, one small nation 
determined to regain its freedom, backed by Olympus in its fight against the 
Might & Power, against the Impossible.
