Why use GetPosition instead of Notification, with DirectSound ?

This is for the win32 version with DirectSound:
A friend of mine said to me that you use a loop, and a GetPosition to see
where you are in the buffer, to know when (and where) write data.
I would like to know, if you have encountered problems with notification
(using a thread that WaitForSingleObject) ?
Else, why not using Notif ?
