Using bdsinstall to allocate disk in same format as sysinstall does. After 
creating bsd type and creating each partition size it does not add allocated 
sizes together to keep from allocating more space than available on hard drive. 
You can select finish and it will try to do the install to the hard drive and 
issue error ran out of space. It returns you to the Partition editor but does 
not allow the size field to be changed. Have to restart the install from 
scratch again. 

Even when using the Partition editor for the initial time can not modify space 
field.  This is for sure a BUG.

To be more user friendly should have option to use sade utility to allocate the 
8.x style disk partition layout.
