Modern(ish) LSI controllers (and perhaps others) probe and report devices in a
random order which may change after a reboot. This pretty much makes glabel
mandatory for referring to devices. LSI says that's the just way it is, and to
use either operating system labels or create RAID volumes on the controller.
gstat reports devices based on their hardware device names, so there is a nice
pre-sorted (in some kernel ordering) list of devices. For example, da0 through
da16 are displayed in order. So far, so good.
If I glabel the devices as slotN and then do "gstat -f slot", I get a list
which is still sorted by the hardware device name as shown in the attachment,
even though the more useful order would be the slotN names I assigned. I
propose a -s flag which would sort the display by the name.
