In a failing pppoe connection, /var/log/ppp.log shows this for the reconnects
count :
May 18 22:14:04 metropolis ppp[439]: tun0: Chat: deflink: Reconnect try 10001
of 10000
May 18 22:15:28 metropolis ppp[439]: tun0: Chat: deflink: Reconnect try 10002
of 10000
May 18 22:16:36 metropolis ppp[439]: tun0: Chat: deflink: Reconnect try 10003
of 10000
The 10000 is from a "set reconnect 5 10000" in ppp.conf but it seems there is
something wrong in the way the trials number is displayed.
