Given a txt/csv file named 'a',
-rw-r--r-- 1 howie howie 18 May 5 16:26 a
$ sort -k 1 -r a -o b
$ ls -la
total 37
drwxr-xr-x 2 howie howie 4 May 5 16:33 .
drwxr-xr-x 10 howie howie 12 May 5 16:26 ..
-rw------- 1 howie howie 18 May 5 16:33 a
-rw-r--r-- 1 howie howie 18 May 5 16:32 b
That's ok! Now, let's use sort to 'update' the input file, note the file
permission of 'a'
$ sort -k 1 -r a --output a
$ls -la
total 37
drwxr-xr-x 2 howie howie 4 May 5 16:47 .
drwxr-xr-x 10 howie howie 12 May 5 16:26 ..
-rw------- 1 howie howie 18 May 5 16:47 a
-rw-r--r-- 1 howie howie 18 May 5 16:32 b
$ chmod a+r a
$ ls -la
total 37
drwxr-xr-x 2 howie howie 4 May 5 16:47 .
drwxr-xr-x 10 howie howie 12 May 5 16:26 ..
-rw-r--r-- 1 howie howie 18 May 5 16:47 a
-rw-r--r-- 1 howie howie 18 May 5 16:32 b
$ sort -k 1 -r a --output a
$ ls -la
