I don't know what the ix-guys behind FreeBSD have done, but the error has simply disappeared when I installed FreeBSD 11.2-RELEASE. No more kernel panics! I have rebooted 10 times so far, and still going. Earlier I was lucky if I could even get a single reboot to load properly... 11.2-RELEASE is the way to go!!! You may close this ticket.
