It would be great if someone can test a Linux distro on this hardware with a fbdev console. The existence of this patch suggests to me that the hi1710 is in fact not fully VGA compatible. The most likely path forward here is to add a quirks table for broken hardware, and default to hw.vga.textmode=1 here.
