I think I may  have guess wrong about the staging
that you were referring to:

A ) Before the reboot the dump is put in the swap partition
  as raw data. There is a dump command that can be used
  at the db> prompt.

B) Then rebooting analyzes the dump in the swap partition
  and puts the information in /var/crash .

My notes did not over (B), just (A).
