The periodic sendmail -q runs also tend to accumulate huge (>100) amounts of
the "sendmail (dma)" processes dangling under maillnull user. I was able to
partly mitigate it using rctl(8)

rctl -a user:mailnull:maxproc:deny=10

This can be persisted in rctl.conf(5)

Why this happens, no idea, probably bug in dma.
