Two machines freshly cvsupped with 5-Stable to the same level.
Generic Computer Athlon XP Barton 3000, 512M, 80G 7200 RPM drive
make buildworld 1928 seconds 32.13 minutes make buildkernel 449 seconds 7.48 minutes make installworld 16 seconds
Thinkpad T42 Pentium M 1.7GHz, 512M, 40G 7200 RPM drive, AC power
make buildworld 1838 seconds 30.63 minutes make buildkernel 421 seconds 7.02 minutes make installworld 17 seconds
So the little notebook is noticeably faster than the power tower. But to make up for the difference, the tower has a serial port! And four--FOUR!--loud fans!
The 2mb L2 cache on the Pentium M makes a big difference in compliation. In other cases, it doesn't matter much.
The T42 also runs FreeBSD very well. All of the hardware on mine is supported, except, I think, the modem. I've never had reason to want to use it, so it's not a problem for me.
