# ifconfig vtnet0
vtnet0: flags=8843<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> metric 0 mtu 1500

        ether 08:00:27:96:b3:bc
        inet netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast
        media: Ethernet 10Gbase-T <full-duplex>
        status: active

There are offloading capabilities present, but apparently VirtualBox
virtio doesn't do it correctly.

# ifconfig vtnet0 -tso

solves the problem, I can log in via ssh just fine.
